Square Enix will not add microtransactions to its single-player games

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda told MCV that the company does not plan to implement microtransactions to its “console” games. Yosuke Matsuda claimed that players have different expectations for console – and PC – games and microtransactions simply do not fit.

“The way that console games are made, the volume of content, and how much effort goes into them, there’s something in that which doesn’t fit in the mind with microtransactions.”

However, Square Enix is really open to releasing more content – in the form of DLCs – for its single-player games. Moreover, Matsuda claimed that Square Enix still has to think how to enhance its games, and how to let players share the experience with each other.

As such, it comes as no surprise that the PC version of Final Fantasy XV will support mods. Square Enix will obviously try to experiment with the modding community in order to see whether ‘players will share the experience with each other‘ and whether these tools will ‘enhance‘ the game itself.

Furthermore, Square Enix considers the PC platform to be really important to it. In an interview with the Telegraph, Matsuda stated that the PC is essential to Square Enix.

It’s also worth pointing out that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had microtransactions. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Matsuda is talking about future SE games or not. Or perhaps he’s referring to Square Enix’s Japanese console/PC games.

  1. Good to hear, i’m fine with DLC if it’s a game I enjoy and want more I have the option to purchase said content.

I am going to ignore any future games with MT/LB, it may limit my choices but hey we all have a backlog right.

  2. Even rise of the tomb raider had microtransactions. Though it had nothing to do with the base game, but yeah I don’t believe them.

    1. Crazy we have gotten to this point. Seems like every normal PC game features we had before is now celebrated like it’s an added feature and a big deal and should not be included.

I wonder if they will every charge for Tessellation, 4K textures, FOV slider, M&KB support, game pad support, 21:9, multi-screen, normal mapping, no micro transactions, no DRM, 60FPS, SP, dynamic lighting, etc. Could you imagine if they cut all those things up/out of a game and then sold it to us as features 🙁 , that be horrible.

  3. DLC? No problem. In fact if Square Enix went back to the paradigm of the “Expansion Pack” that would be great. For your story based games; shy away from cosmetic DLCs, release Story Expansions that could easily take up maybe half the length of the base game?

As for Episodic games? A bit concerned on my end. Will wait to see just how substantial Final Fantasy VII Remake turns out to be.

January: Square Enix confirm they’ll no longer be making single-player games

    1. Haha, you kinda jinxed it. Eidos Montreal, the creators of the new Deus Ex and Tomb Raider series, just announced that they are going to emphasize on online experiences from now on. And their titles are published by Square Enix.

      1. Too funny! I just saw the since published article here about that. Square Enix seldom disappoint when it comes to matching our lowest expectations insofar as their laughably disingenuous PR assurances are concerned. I wouldn’t p1ss on them if they were on fire!

  5. I don’t believe your bullsh** Sh** Enix. Especially after you kill Deus Ex, and realease FF XV in early access status.

  6. “Furthermore, Square Enix considers the PC platform to be really important to it.”

So important to them, that they delay and save PC for dead last, while charging high for the long wait period.

I wish I believed as you do, but as far as I can actually see, SE treats PC like a bank on the side. They promise a little here and there and they do release some titles, but they end up being cobbled together with a high price tag and poor performance.

Sega is going back to doing the same as well. if these publishers truly treated PC seriously, we’d be seeing an explosion of them releasing their backlog of titles that haven’t touched PC, being released onto the platform. Instead we’ve seen 3 old titles from Sega within the past 3-4 years, while they still retain their massive backlog. The same goes for SE.

    1. Yeah Sega pisses me off, no Persona, Yakuza or Valkyria Chronicles, we got f* Sonic games. I don’t really mind the late release of FF XV from SE, the game is still not complete, they just patched in the feature to switch characters in combat, and there is still a 2nd season pass.

      1. Sometimes complaining can be great for the community for example the Battlefront situation but it just gets ridiculous. Had Square Enix say they will continue with microtransactions, the community would lose it’s mind. When they say they won’t add microtransactions, the community still loses it’s mind. It’s just stupid really and pointless.

  7. Oh, there will be ‘enhancements’ all right, you can count on the mod comunity for that. Cindy will be the first one.
