Middle-earth: Shadow of War is now available, uses the Denuvo anti-tamper tech

A couple of months ago, it was reported that Middle-earth: Shadow of War would not be powered by the Denuvo anti-tamper tech. However, this was false information. This information came from a Warner Bros’ community manager on the Steam forums. The community manager claimed that a “Middle-earth: Shadow of” was not using Denuvo. However, he was referencing to Shadow of Mordor and not Shadow of War. So, Warner Bros released today Middle-earth: Shadow of War and as you may have guessed, it uses Denuvo.

Now we wouldn’t be posting this article if it wasn’t for that misinterpreted forum post. And that’s because we are pretty sure that a lot of people still believe that the game will not be using it. Warner Bros has not provided us with a review code so we couldn’t confirm prior to the game’s release whether it was using it or not. Since we purchased the game for our PC Performance Analysis, we can now confirm that it uses it.

Another upcoming title that will be using Denuvo is The Evil Within 2. Contrary to Warner Bros, Bethesda has provided us with a review code for The Evil Within 2. As such, we can confirm that Denuvo is present in it.

Warner Bros has also released the launch trailer for Shadow of War, and you can watch it below.

It’s worth noting that the PC version of Shadow of War also comes with a 4K HD Texture Pack.

Enjoy and stay tuned for our PC Performance Analysis!

  1. Cool, another reason not to buy the game, mind you loot boxes are the thing now, AAA games are not £40 anymore, Season pass, DLC, microtransations, loot boxes.

    1. The true ending requires that you either grind or pay up in their loot box mode, once you haven’t heard already. Let that sink in.

    2. Do like me, get the older games and play that instead until the new ones become cheaper. I bought assassins creed rogue for 7€ and I’m having a blast.

    1. unless baldman decides to come back, the game will still have denuvo evne if cracked. So i dont get your point.

    2. This game is even more cancerous than the Creation Club, just don’t play it at all, even acknowledging its existence gives it power it doesn’t deserve.

      1. Take that! You won’t get to play it the second it launches! You’ll have to wait a few hours to play this “amazing” game. WB just go away.

  2. I just hope that gamers are really going to tell WB where to shove this Shadow of Sh*t game and not buy into this nonsense. If Publishers get away with this and don’t feel the financial sting from low sales then this kind of nonsense will only spread.

      1. SteamSpy. I should have specified I was referring to the PC version, though I doubt if the console versions are doing that much better.

    1. Maybe some gamers choose to buy this game on Windows Store instead of Steam? For some people UWP version is better because:

      – don’t use Denuvo
      – single buy between PC and Xbox.

As you know Denuvo is available only for win32 games so WinStore version can’t be protected by this DRM. All UWP games such as Forza, Gears use standard DRM built in Windows 10 instead of external DRM.

        1. Some gamers hate Denuvo… They can choose “Steam + Denuvo” or “Windows Store without Denuvo + free Xbox version”

  3. I’ll wait until they remove it, out of principle i’ll also get the game on rebate AND not buy any god damn crates or whatever.

      1. Yea good point. I think Batman AK ended up being left alone by the dev/publisher hence why they refunded everybody. I had bought the game day1 was an uber mess. Waited played it alll (good story and gameplay) 50hours later they refunded me when i was done with the game :). So for Batman i think it’s normal they don,t remove it since well, it’s dead. But for this one, i think we might have a chance, they wouldn’t be the firsts to do it, let,s hope the game gets cracked and they remove it.

        1. Just sad. It’s not stopping piracy it’s already out there. Not to mention the pirated version runs way better without Denuvo.

  4. We just had back to back fantastic releases with Divinity, Cuphead and A Hat in Time, all DRM Free. Support one (or all) of those devs, they’re far more deserving of your cash.

  5. To anyone that buys this game: it will be thanks to you that loot crates will be a common thing in single players games in the near future.

    1. Not really it’s going to happen whether we like it or not. Just look at what Microsoft has been doing with all it’s key franchises. Forza, Gears, Halo etc. all have loot boxes in them now of some form. Microsoft has set the precedent and essentially given the green light to other developers/publishers to do the same. Sad but true.

      1. And? Their attempts to continue Gears failed, Halo is choking to death on 343’s incompetence & Forza is crumbling to controversy.

This only works if it’s financially successful & so far that’s just not happened (yet).

        1. Forza was recently hit by controversy. Microsoft (surprisingly) handled it relatively well, but we’ll have to see how that affects the game in the long-term.

      2. it’s going to happen IF people support such practices, if nobody buys into this crap and don’t take it lying down they will stop, That said the general consumer is not exactly know for their brilliance so i have no hope whatsoever.

    2. Well if you don’t get the crates it’s useless. I don’t think the crates are the big problem here. I think devs cutting on main story for future dlc is the big problem… Just don’t buy the crates. They’ll understand one day or another,.

      1. I don’t mind at all having to put effort into my progression through a game. That is part of the challenge of the game but there is a limit. As long as the Developer doesn’t make the grind so tedious that the experience ceases being fun and becomes more like work unless you spend extra money to bypass all that then fine.

One thing to consider for anyone that is going to get this game. Don’t reward WB with spending extra money to avoid the grinding. If anything, get a trainer and use that to get what you need to progress if you have to. I know some of them charge money but it’s better than rewarding WB for this nonsense.

  6. Also they said it is HDR compatible and I read on the Geforce forums there is no HDR option to be found. Wow!

  7. i’m just waiting for wolfenstein, i don’t care about any other game unless i get a free key and in that case i’ll just activate the game and let it get dust, let’s be honest, all upcoming games are trash other than wolfenstein and evil within.

      1. More like politicians, starting with the filth clogging up Brussels.

After that, we’ll see. Revolutions tend to create demographic changes on their own by their very nature, after all.

        1. no after that you gonna see right winger populist morons destroying the economy and democracy.

Face it, Brussels is the least of your problems if you place your bet on the clowns that are against eu. Afd didnt even get in the parliament and one of them already steped down. Is this how you gonna save Europe? By having the most pathetic anti establishment politicians that are LARPing?

          1. If Europe breaks apart under the populists, it’ll eventually reform. There’s too much long-term support for free movement of actual citizens, free trade, etc. Also, an optional common currency, because that sh*t favours the strong nations way too much.

Alternatively, if Europe reforms before it can break apart, as some populist groups actually want it to, then that’s even better. Either way, Brussels has to go, or we’re all doomed. You’re packing all the populist movements together & just blatantly labelling them as “bad.” That doesn’t work.

Yes, some of them are anti-EU, some of them are anti-Euro, whereas some of them are pro-reforms, etc. etc. etc. Golden Dawn is one thing, AfD is another, National Front is similar, but ultimately neither or. Most populists have nothing against the economy & generally not democracy either, unlike the sociopathic regressive leftists who think Socialism is the key to salvation. Golden Dawn wants ethnic purity, AfD wants to topple Merkel, all three want to stop the economic migrants.

Either way, one of the few things “all” the populists can agree upon is that they just don’t have any interest in putting up with Brussels’ edicts & they don’t think anyone should be forced to, either, which is more than right, as nobody elects those arrogant sh*ts anyway & most of them are beyond corrupt.

          2. Catalonia is a good example of this.
They’re actually supporting the authoritarian cracking down of the region instead of promoting social and political reform on a State composed of a mixture of countries and cultures thats slowly stagnating which could avoid the balkanizatio and uproar we are seeing now.
Social and political reforms that the top game at the EU in Brussels don’t want to make as they consolidate their power on the organization thats been in stagnation for years.

We should avoid this topic that I stupidily brought up though, this isn’t videogames.

  8. Star Wars on the hands of EA Games
Middle Earth on the hands of WB

What a waste of 2 great universe.

What will be next, Ubisoft getting the rights to explore Game of Thrones ?

    1. That has Denuvo as well man. Just so we understand – expect everyone except Activision/2K to use Denuvo now and you will be ok. Bethesda and EA are two huge clients for Denuvo.

  9. I can’t remember another game that I loved so much where the sequel repulsed me as much as Shadow of War does.

  10. Now that was a short way from huge hype to huge fail 😛 I really don’t know what went well with this game, SLI support on launch is the only thing I can name. The rest is disappointing. Performance isn’t good even though the game is not looking any better than Shadow of Mordor, if not worse. Everything what is going on in this game is a parody of Middle-earth. Denuvo. Microtransactions. Man, hopefully AC: Origins won’t fail like that. I really don’t like the way big games are going. Witcher 3 has shown a way over 2 years ago and since then instead of taking the example from the most praised and successful game since I don’t even remember when, they decided to do the exact opposite.

  11. Not this time, I don’t think. As I’ve heard it, the new game actually runs terribly, so good luck praising it for being “optimised.”

  12. Great let the denuvo crybabies commence!!! I have 0 issues with denuvo I’m not a hacker I buy games. And no game that I have purchased that has denuvo has given me any technical issues or have made me regret buying them…

  13. That is because it was quite satisfying finishing orcs in so many different ways, plus your new skill kept it fresh as well. The first game was excellent right the right length to have to play a little more after you finished it. It is sad to see this game marred by Denuvo though.. I don’t know if I will be buying it, maybe it will come to GOG.
