Bethesda has released a new trailer for Quake Champions, revealing its Clutch champion. Clutch is available on the on-going closed beta phase of Quake Champions, can block incoming attacks with its Barrier active ability, and can stand strong using its Still Defense passive ability to deflect attacks like a boulder. Enjoy the trailer after the jump!
Thomas is a close friend to John ‘john2’ and John ‘WhatGoesAroundComesAround’. Thomas, John and John basically came with the idea of DSOGaming. Thomas has been helping John with News articles these past years, and prefers to stay in the background than the foreground.
I’m sorry but this doesn’t look THAT good. Talking about gameplay and graphics wise.
Graphics are forgiven, it’s supposed to run fast (although I heard the beta does not do that yet). But their failure to show proper gameplay is annoying, especially this early on when hyping Overwatch casuals about this game is pointless as it’s not available to the public and won’t be any time soon. I think the beta will probably stay “closed” until Quakecon (end of summer this year). And the beta isn’t any fun any way with all the technical difficulties so casuals that make it in via lottery now will be disappointed. It’s a bewildering marketing strategy, similar to how they just took PC sales for granted and had no PC gameplay until a week before launch.
Yeah, I don’t understand their Beta approach at all, especially the NDA.
I mean, it’s not an MMO, or a single-player campaign game, or something like that, it’s just a simple, straightforward multiplayer shooter, so what the hell is the point of the NDA.
The NDA is there because the game is currently close to unplayable. There are many technical problems that need to be fixed before they present it to the “public”. They don’t want the first impression of a potential new player to be “this game fried my GPU by running the menu at 2000 fps” or “I’m stuck in a loading screen all day and when it finally let me play it crashed to bluescreen after 10 seconds”.
Good point. Can’t have your casual scrub noob moron idiot that thinks “BETA = DEMO” running away screaming after 30 seconds about how it “melted my GPU” or some such bullsh*t.
Clutch reminds me a lot of the player models from the Reflex Arena.

Slow movement and mostly in straight line…
Classic Quake, oh yeah!
Play with xbot gaympad for the best experience™.
Slow walk, instant frag, slow walk, one-liner that will get annoying after you’ve heard it twice, another idiot slow walks in your crosshair and gets instagibbed by you throwing a gummibear at him.
WE WANT THE OVERWATCH AUDIENCE
BIG MONEY, WE WANT IT ALL!.
Publishers just want the big bucks these days, they hardly care for the little niche dedicated audiences.
I’ve noticed that DoW III is turning into a MOba, LoL is the most popular and biggest money making Moba on the market, so it’s no surprise that the publisher wants that Moba money. Same goes for id/Bethesda and the Overwatch crowd.
Have you played DO3? If not then quit calling it a MOBA because it isn’t one. It has MOBA elements but is still an RTS at its core. If you think DOW3 is becoming a MOBA, then go play DOW2 because that is much closer to LoL and DotA.
Why don’t you go play DoW II and call it a day?.
Doesn’t refute my point that DOW3 isn’t a MOBA.
And I deny it. The world keeps on spinning.
Glad I’m not into brainless slaughter in gaming.
That’s not what Quake is about, if that’s what you’re thinking.
This Quake? Yes, it is.
Quake Chumpions
another esport to bite the dust.they should have just did another quake sp game.
“they should have just another quake sp game.”
What.
sp = Single player
I know what “sp” means, what I’m trying to figure out is why this known troll is trying to make the argument that they should have made another Strogg SP game, instead.
I mean, the last Quake SP game was Q4, & it went down like a lemon with the community, & Q3 completely overshadowed the success of Q2, making a single-player investment into the Quake IP the single, dumbest-f*cking-possible move that id could make at this time.
Well, short of Champions, arguably.
Sh*t, he’s right.
I’ll love a SP FPS too, I miss the genre since I can not enjoly console shooters with its straight halls, dumb enemies, cover system, lack of exploration, limit of 2-3 weapons, life regeneration, checkpoints every two steps…
A good old PC exclusive FPS with modern graphics is what I need to retrieve le love for the genre
Sadly, it doesn’t seem like QC is due to be a PC exclusive for long, regardless 🙁
Though in regards to the first paragraph, I think we can hope for more old school elements from the inevitable DOOM sequel, all things considered.
Well, in theory, at least.
I really don’t care about QC being exclusive or not, it’s just an Overwatch copy and Overwach is just a dumbed down copy of TF2 for console players.
like i said it an esport that will fail because the pc market is flooded with esports.its just another esport on the block to fail at launch.
the reason why doom did so well is because its a sp game.if if they re did thies esport quake to a sp quake like the days of old it would do very well.
“it an esport that will fail because the pc market is flooded with esports”
Quake Live is & has been an eSport for years, now, & it has done quite well for itself in that time. Yes, it’s not DOTA or CS big, but it fills its corner.
QC won’t fail because it’s targeting eSports. QC will fail because it’s trying to be Overwatch, rather than Quake.
it will just be another over watch clone like everything else is and just fall in to the pack until no one plays it any more.
Looks like an insult to the “Quake” name!
TLDR: Quake Overwatch will fail because it’s appealing to the TF2/OW crowd, rather than the Quake 3 community itself.
Long version; So I wrote this in response to another such post by some randomer who’s ardently decrying that “people should give Quake Champions a chance”, & I decided to transcript it here, too;
Aside from the allegations of dumbing down the gameplay (I don’t (currently) have beta access, & the Beta is under NDA, anyway (what the f*ck is the point of an NDA in this situation, anyway?), so I can’t confirm or deny anything personally, so I’ll just skirt them all, entirely);
The way I see it, the fact that they’re taking a new approach, coupled with the fact that there won’t be mod tools at launch constitutes the most dangerous thing of all for the community. Quake 3 has splintered itself off into various sub-communities of people who only want to play one, maybe two specific mods. Quake Live never made any major concessions in that regard, which in turn resulted in a lot of people just never bothering with it at all, & QC seems to be starting off on much the same path.
Yes, they’ve said there won’t be mod tools “at launch”, specifically, but at the same time, unless they give us proper mod tools with which to work with (tools powerful enough to recreate Defrag, for example), they’re not going to properly incentivise most of the Q3 communities to even think about switching over, either. Ergo; SnapMap just won’t cut it this time, nor will some beefed up version of it, either.
After all, the Quake community’s small, & that’s the root of the problem; it’s fine when an IP like Counter-Strike launches a new iteration, as it’s big enough that each version of it can co-exist separately from the other, but when it comes to Quake, Quake Live seems to have ended up doing more damage through community splintering in the end than not, & so far QC seems to be well on its way to doing the same.
In order to revive interest in Quake, id should be appealing to the core fanbase first, & from there expand into appealing to the more casual people with modern additions like Hero-Champions (which should be introduced more incrementally, like on a per-game mode basis, or some such). Otherwise, they’re throwing away core, dedicated players in favour of people who may &/or may not stay with the game in the long-term. After all, this is a F2P game, not a paid access one, & an F2P requires a long-term commitment from both the developers & the community. Without either one of those two, the game will inevitably fail, & casuals only help with that so much.
I mean, yes, most of the micro-transactions, & thus, the profits will originate from casuals, but at the end of the day, it’s not casuals who’ll be investing the most time into the game. People keep saying Quake needs something new in order to “stay fresh” or vice-versa, or whatever, but at the same time, I can’t help but find myself thinking of DOTA 2; Valve’s WC3 DOTA remake is basically the exact same game – albeit, with minor tweaks, but it has nevertheless taken off like a rocket, on its own merits. Most of the WC3 community has openly embraced it, & while the mod itself hasn’t been entirely abandoned, it hasn’t crippled DOTA 2’s adoption, either. Not to mention, to a lesser extent, the approach Epic Games is taking with its own Unreal Tournament reboot-sequel.
On the other hand, here’s an antithesis example; Halo 4. For 343’s first major outing, they decided the best thing for them to do would be to replace Bungie’s Halo with Call of Duty: Halo. Needless to say, that didn’t exactly work out for them either, & Halo 5 was all but forced to take several major steps back in that regard, though even Halo 5’s multiplayer doesn’t come close to toppling the epitome of the series that was Halo 3. Regardless, the point being; 343 created a deep divide in the Halo community with their own personal (ripoff) approach, & that was with an IP that can actually take a couple of hits & survive, unlike Quake, which right now is facing a pretty straightforward “pass or fail” affair in regards to its future.
Then, of course, there’s also the fact that creating a Quake-Overwatch combination game means they’re banking on a lot of Overwatch & TF2 people being interested enough to convert, & also stick with it, since it’s an F2P, not a paid-access game, which is really weak thinking; Overwatch filled a niche using two major powers at its disposal: Valve’s laziness towards TF2 development in recent years which infuriated a lot of people, & the words “Blizzard Entertainment” which no matter what, always draws massive crowds (at least until Blizzard somehow kills the game, that is). Coupled with an over-exaggerated hype campaign, Overwatch put itself in a prime position to compete with TF2. QC, however, has none of these advantages, & most importantly; it’s coming in after, but also not far enough after Overwatch, which means that while it might successfully snag a few people who got bored with TF2 & Overwatch in turn, they’ll be the exception, rather than a sizeable minority, or an overall majority. It’s the same argument as with Call of Duty clones, just a few years ago; some of them stood out, yes, but none of them ever actually beat Call of Duty – not even Titanfall, which had something actually original going for it, as well.
In short, regardless of what I, personally think about the Champions (amongst other cited things) degrading the gameplay, in the end that’s nevertheless completely separate from how this approach is just a bad decision for a Quake game in 2017, period. Not to mention how this is definitely being degraded for consoles, regardless of their claims that it’s going to be a “PC-exclusive.”
microtransactions? I thought the game have no microtransactions. Play for free with a generic boring character or buy the full game with all the characters
To be fair, they’re being very mum & vague on the details so far, but this is a pretty good summary of it all;
“In an interview last week, Willits said that players who want to can play a single character, a Champion named Ranger, for free. Or they can buy the Champion Pack and get unlimited access to Ranger and all his other friends for a fixed price.”
(I’m assuming it won’t include DLC Champions). Ergo; you can either pony up & buy them all (for an as-of-yet undisclosed amount), or you can “rent” them, individually, for limited periods of time, using an in-game currency that you obtain by grinding. You can’t “rent” or “buy” them individually through real-life money, though (supposedly);
“I don’t want to use the word rent,” Willits said. “You do spend favor to have access to them for a limited amount of time, yes. But you don’t spend any real money on it.”
Aside from that, most people are basically expecting them to have some sort of cosmetic microtransactions system in place, though id themselves haven’t said a word in regards to this (yet).
Other than that, there was a job posting at id that came to light about a month ago; “MONETIZATION DESIGNER – ID SOFTWARE”
“id Software, part of the ZeniMax Media Inc. family, is seeking an exceptional Monetization Designer with a passion for making sticky systems for successful games. The candidate will collaborate with the design team, analytics group, marketing, and tech department to develop, optimize, and tune fun and compelling monetization features as well as other related sticky systems.
Responsibilities:
Develop and manage the economy/monetization components for competitive multiplayer
Work closely with design team to develop a framework for a successful live game
Manage pricing of virtual goods and balance free vs. paid currency in the game economy
Design game features that monetize and re-engage players
Review reporting on in-game currency usage, earning and purchasing
Drive new initiatives for monetizing the customer base
Work with a team of analysts to propose new features and define, collect and analyze metrics”
Which people have overwhelmingly attributed to being in regards to either Quake Champions, or some other unannounced id/Bethesda game.
Though it is worth noting that they also mentioned this;
“The goal is to minimize that sense of grind that comes in other free-to-play titles. Favor will be easy to earn, and trading it in for other Champions will be a frequent and fun way to spend it. But, there’s other ways to burn off excess currency as well. Players can spend favor on backpacks, which will enable them to take on rune challenges. Succeeding at a rune challenge will grant players reliquaries, which they can open to reveal new Champions and new skins.”
For whatever it ends up being worth.
F**k you, who reads that ? 😀
😀 F*ck you too.
The one other guy who upvoted it? 😛
5 mins of lobbies for a 10 min game, GG.
