Epic Games showcased a Next-Gen Graphics Unreal Engine 5.2 Tech Demo

At its State of Unreal 2023 presentation, Epic showcased a next-gen graphics tech demo for Unreal Engine 5.2. In this demo, the team showcased some of the new features that will be coming to it.

These new features include Substrate, a new method for handling materials, and new procedural generation tools.

Furthermore, the demo shows off Unreal Engine 5.2’s Chaos Physics and some real-time fluid simulations. This tech demo of course uses Nanite and Lumen.

Unreal Engine 5.2 will also come with new features that will attempt to reduce shader compilation stutters. As we’ve reported, Epic Games will be adding a new PSO precaching mechanism to it.

Let’s now hope that we’ll get some games in 2023 or 2024 that will look as good as this tech demo.

Enjoy!

  1. Absolutely mind-blowing visuals. The fact that it’s all fully dynamic is amazing. Brian Karis is a genius.

  2. Two thoughts come to my mind when I see this.

    1) Such great technologies, and yet such terrible games.
The more beautiful the worlds they create are, the more boring they make them. (yeah yeah Witcher 3 bla bla bla… I DIDN’T PLAY IT YET. lol)
If only we could go back to good old 90s-early 2000s gameplay, but with such modern graphics.

I bet that developers will use that engine in what, boring empty mmorpgs with microtransactions? Linear FPS on rails? Woke-riddled casual filth? Sigh…

I wish we got instead a proper sequel or remake of the 90s Might and Magic games (6 and 7 especially) in UE 5.2.
Now I would throw money at the screen. Just me, huh? Well, tell me what YOU would like to see in UE 5.2! Whether it’s a remake or a new game.

Anyway, my point it, I’m just not excited anymore about such stuff. That’s how low my expectations are. Developers all over the world need to seriously question themselves. Old gamers like me want deeper experiences (no sexual jokes, please), and clearly modern games are failing in this department.

Uncle Ben tried to warn us! lol

…and terrible grammar. Yeah, I know. ?(hey, English as a second language, okay?)

    2) When I see such realistic-looking graphics, I can’t help thinking about Cypher in Matrix when he talks about his steak. lol
I’m worried that a growing number of people will feel BETTER in virtual worlds than in reality. (I know it’s already the case for some since decades, but it’s only going to accelerate from now on.)

We’ll soon get to a point where people will feel like it’s okay to plug their brain into the Matrix and abandon their real life, cos they’ll consider “virtuality”(whatever you call it) is simply better, more exciting and fulfilling.
When 3 of our 5 senses are covered, I think it’ll seal the deal.
    1) Sight: well, judging from this video, we’re already reaching real-life graphics.
    2) Hearing: some good headphones can reproduce 3D sound very accurately already.
    3) Smell: certainly the next in line. They’ve tried already for years but it’s not ready yet. Results are very promising though.
    4) Taste: Also in the works and progressing slowly but surely.
    5) Touch : The final frontier. It’s already here, but extremely far from being realistic enough. And there’s still a loooong way to go before we can feel the texture of any plant, the fur of any animal or even the feeling of going underwater. And how about the feeling of the wind in my hair when I drive a convertible?
Anyway, I think that sight, hearing and touch will be enough to convince people to live in the matrix.

….. I guess you can tell it’s my off day and I have nothing to do today, huh?

    1. Id pay full price (something I NEVER do) and literally dont work for weeks if there would be an UE5 version of: Arcanum, Blood, Fallout1+2, Xcom UFO+TFDD, Resident Evil 1/Code Veronica with fix cam (disregarding for obvious reasons RE2+3, idc about 4), what else… Chrono Cross! FF8… Command and Conquer

  3. Amazing tech and very impressive visuals! Now when will we see actual games with visuals like this?! Probably not any time soon…
