Daymare: 1998, cancelled Resident Evil 2 Reborn fan project, gets first gameplay trailer

Invader Studios, the team behind the fan-made remake for Resident Evil 2 that was cancelled, has just released the first trailer for Daymare 1998. Daymare: 1998 is based on the cancelled Resident Evil 2 Reborn project, is built on the Unreal Engine 4 and is currently under development for the PC.

In Daymare 1998, players are expected to survive to this waking nightmare that has its roots in a nostalgic mood. The game’s narration is full of direct references to the pop culture of the 90’s and the modern gameplay mechanics aim to fit perfectly with the old school survival horror atmosphere.

Daymare: 1998 also boasts the contribution of Capcom’s former game artist Satoshi Nakai (Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil Code Veronica) who is currently working on the design of the deadly creatures that will haunt the game.

Enjoy!

  1. Hmm, looks more survival horror than I expected with a modern aiming system. Still, I hope RE2 Remake remains faithful and simply incorporates the same classic and alternative control schemes found in the REmake HD port.

    1. Because the re2 remake that this Brazilian dude has made on youtube does not look faithful in 3rd person aiming?

      1. I just meant that games usually tend to feel like they aren’t as true to survival horror design aspects if they incorporate aiming, at least compared to Alone in the Dark, RE 1-3, Silent Hill, etc.

        1. I’ll never understand this POV.
Cops/military bad at shooting slow zombies.

That’s why RE4 is the best, stop taking that crap seriously and just suplex your enemies. 😀

          1. It’s totally unrealistic, but I love the feeling of being disempowered. I’m okay with the sacrifice to believability if the game mechanics are strong.

          2. I can see that, but not only unrealistic the former games plays like a**.
Capcom was on point with the level design, puzzles, encounters and overall feeling of survival, but the gameplay is a**.
And since you not supposed to play it like a shooter anyway, having a OTS camera/sim not only wouldn’t affect the designs it would also improve the gameplay IMO.

          3. And who says you can’t feel disempowered with 3rd person aiming? If you have few bullets and are surrounded by enemies I’d feel very disempowered.

  2. Why waste such talent for making games on remakes when you can make your own IP and still take those elements veteran gamers like and add your own style… Good for them, I keep an eye on this.

    1. He can still do that./ But I think that him pulling off a remake that Capcom denied would make for a better impression, as it shows that he might be able to fully deliver on what he and the fans wanted. Then with that kind of rep built up, he could make his very own IP using said ideas and improvements.

  3. This is what we were asking when we said “back to the roots” … not some first person condemned/P.T clone.

    This looks awesome.

As for capcom, they can shove RE7 up their a**!

        1. It’s like Lucy with the football in those old Charlie Brown cartoons, we know she’s gonna pull it back at the last second but it’s just so tempting so we run for it anyways.
I’m lucky in that my fav franchise is officially dead (Witcher!) so I’m partially protected from over hype

          1. My three favorite franchises/series/universes: Zelda, Half Life and the Ueda/Team Ico games.
So yeah if I where to take my love for them seriously I would be completely mad at this point. xP

    1. Yes, this is exactly what I’ve been wanting from them all these years. I don’t want some crappy Blair Witch meets Texas Chainsaw, Outlast type game. I want a Resi 1-3/Outbreak type Resident Evil game.

    2. You and all the people who believe that are clueless It is a first person old school re, it has puzzles, same tiny inventory, chests to store items, it is nonlinear, stop being stupid

      1. Just so you know! RE isn’t defined by 3 or 4 minor mechanics. Also, where is the cheese and camp?

Again! RE is the sum of its parts…. .and the parts are missing here.

          1. I complained in another post. Can’t bother typing it up again. And yes, that included the tank-ish controls and 3rd person camera. Along with lack of cheese, camp, characters, sinister villains, otp moments and comedy intentional/unintentional.

    3. I dont know man. I loved the old games but if i had to pick First person view vs tank controls and static cameras i would probably prefer fpv.

The game still has all the stuff from RE1. Mansion filled with puzzles, monsters, bosses, items and weapons. Save game type writers, item boxes, inventory management.

I think my only gripe is that they could have easily put in a third person mode to keep the RE4 guys happy.

  4. Really strong art, game world comes with a good amount of detail. I wonder if they are using this as a teaser to hook some finicial support, or maybe gauge interest in a kickstarter Hope to see more, Zombies overall are becoming a tougher sale but this looks good.
