Steam just set a new record as it surpassed over 34 million concurrent players

Steam just set a new record of concurrent players. Back in January 2024, Valve’s digital platform surpassed 33 million concurrent players. And yesterday, Steam hit over 34 million concurrent players.

It’s also interesting to look at the Top 20 Most Played Games (for the last 24 hours). As we can see, the most played game remains Counter-Strike 2, followed by DOTA 2. It’s shockingly impressive how these games are still so popular. In third place, we find PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, followed by Apex Legends, Helldivers 2 and NARAKA: BLADEPOINT. Palworld is in seventh place, whereas GTA5 and Baldur’s Gate 3 are in eighth and tenth place, respectively.

The fact that GTA5 is still in the Top 10 is also impressive. And yet, despite those numbers, Rockstar will not bring the next part of the series on PC at launch. As I’ve said multiple times, this was a business decision and nothing more. Take-Two and Rockstar know there is a huge PC audience for GTA. I mean, you can see for yourselves how popular GTAV still is. So no, the absence of GTA 6 from PC has nothing to do with Rockstar being unable to develop it alongside its console cousin.

Let’s now look at the All-Time Most Played Games on Steam. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is in first place with 3.2 million concurrent players. In second place, we find Palworld with 2.1 million concurrent players. Counter-Strike 2 is in third place, followed by Lost Ark and DOTA 2. The last game that had one million concurrent players was Cyberpunk 2077. In the Top 10, we also find Elden Ring, New World, Hogwarts Legacy and Baldur’s Gate 3.

And that is that. It will be interesting to see when Steam will hit its 35 million goal. Will it happen in Q3 2024, or will we have to wait until 2025? Place your bets, everyone.

Stay tuned for more!

      1. Someone made a list of games “powered” by SweetBaby and the people who work there don’t like it one bit and wants to shut it down.

      2. A curator on Steam called Sweet Baby Inc Detected has listed more games than what’s visible on the company’s Projects webpage. Games like Starfield and Forspoken, but they removed them because the source was a page on IMDb that anyone can edit.

The only way to make sure is to see which Sweet Baby Inc names appear in a game’s credits. But who cares…

  1. poor epig store all that money for exclusives and it hasn’t decreased usership on steam lol 👍🤣

  3. Congratulations to all Steam players!

You may not realize it, but a good chunk of the money Valve earns from you guys is directly poured into great open-source projects like the Linux kernel, therefore improving software for people all around the world and paving the way for many great things to come in the future!

Once again, from the bottom of my heart, thank YOU very much!!

And even though you might still be ignorant about SteamOS today, please keep these wise words from our Lord & Saviour in mind when judging about its merit:

    1. I loved Xenix, Unix and Solaris back in the day but have never got around to Linux as it’s simply not something the basic user wants in their business.

      1. To be fair, enterprise tailored Linux such as RHEL or Ubuntu LTS is nowadays infinitely more advanced than those old-school *Nixes combined, which is why most of these are either dead already or being replaced by Linux.

Honestly, the biggest problem Linux still has is its image problem in the eyes of the public, stemming from the fact that it indeed started out as a hobby OS with no intentions of becoming professional, but around the year 2000 that all changed with the “Dot Com Bubble”, which was a disaster for many but a blessing for Linux in the enterprise.

That was when Linux made a breakthrough in two major markets, namely on Internet servers in the newly forming datacenters and in Hollywood’s major VFX/CGI studios, where it replaced SGI’s Unix derivative called IRIX.

That was a major pivot point for the usability of Linux on desktops & workstations; in fact, that still holds up till the present day, where suitable candidates who want to work in this field are expected to have at least some rudimentary knowledge about Linux.

For example, here’s a poster from Sony Pictures Imageworks (look at the point in the top right corner):

        1. These old school *Nixes were chosen due to their being no simple end user OS and the obvious cost savings when using dumb terminals. I still have fond memories of termcap/terminfo config for the Wyse 60 allowing some nice feature access from my COBOL (MicroFocus Workbench) code. Today PCs are cheap and the chance that something may not work or lack compatibility makes Windows the number one choice.

BTW. I was the guy that kept saying Windows will never catch on, but then those making the decissions were not technically minded. There’s safety in numbers.

  4. Johnny still salty because Rockstar takes gamers for suckers (and rightly so). Prove them wrong, i know you can’t… I still have a free GTAV copy over at Epic, but never touched still.

    1. I for one am not the least bit interested in GTA6, I completely gave up on Rockstar after the RDR2 release debacle …… It was 6 weeks before I could even get the f**king game to launch because of their crappy DRM/Launcher and another 5 weeks before they released another patch to stabilize the game. By that time the Pre-order bonus “online cash” and the Christmas bonus online cash had expired. Just as well because RDR2 Online was a sh*tshow and a complete waste of time.

Just like EA (who hasn’t gotten a dime from me since 2003) Rockstar is completely dead to me and may as well not even exist. You have to work really hard to completely piss me off but if you do I’m done with you. However 99% of people just don’t seem have that kind of commitment these days

      1. “However 99% of people just don’t seem have that kind of commitment these days”

Eh i mean Rockstar had DRM shenanigans and unoptimization ever since GTA 4, along with delayed releases for PC since GTA 3 , you shoudn’t bash people for lack of commitment when it took so long for you to see these companies for what it is. The worst thing that can happen to these companies is unanimous success, this alone delayed GTA 6 and the next Half Life…

  5. Steam = The platform has some issues, but the games are still worth buying.
Epic Store = I get free games.

      1. Yup, pretty much.

Unlike SSD, which are a terrible back-up medium, optical media of archival quality lasts hundreds of years.

      2. Yup. GOG literally gives you the install file.

SSD are a terrible storage medium. Especially the latest SSD with their gazillion overlapping cell layers that promote errors.

Archival quality optical media (like M-discs) is the best storage medium, and lasts hundreds of years.
(those DVD/Blu-Ray used by consoles are horrendous, and not archival at all).

HDD storage (8TB or below, avoid 20TB HAMR or MAMR) is a decent medium too, provided you refresh the data every few decades, and keep it away from electromagnetic forces and permanent magnets (don’t put a HDD on a speaker).

        1. GOG was quite amazing until they decided to bow down and remove a game from their store that made fun of the Chinese president. People like you that have blind love for GOG are embarrassing.

          1. GOG could give 2 ***s about China. It’s a Polish company that isn’t even available in China. Unlike Steam, where the forums and reviews have basically been taken over by Chinese and Russian comments.

Anyway, I looked it up, and of course you are full of ****.

GOG rejected the game, GOG rejects games all the time. Xbox rejected it too, so did Playstaton, so did Nintendo. The game is simply political garbage, it had 4 user reviews on Steam and a 59% user score.

GOG users, who are allowed to decide which games they want on GOG through a voting process, have said many times they do not want political crap on their store, especially not US, and China-Taiwan political crap.

I suggest you go back to Steam, where you can buy political crap without curation, where Twitter children argue about “MAGA” and “Communism” and “nazís” 24/7 and where you can get all the political garbage and crypto filled malware you want.

      1. You don’t own them even if they are physical, you only license the right to put them on one computer at a time

Just read the license you agreed to, they haven’t changed in over 30 years …. You own nothing and you never have unless that game uses an Open Source license

  6. I kinda think they should separate online play from single player play but I think we can assume most of it is the online pvp players. Though I’ve read you can just bypass meats with just the exe so I do think you can own games outright(if no 3rd party login launcher is needed) with meats you just have to buy it through login there like GOG and GOG games mostly don’t have any form of drm once you buy and dl it. All these launchers sound like a huge mess to deal with and meats reviews and forums are littered with related problems. They don’t even give you anything physical but many companies still need a login to even play sp games like jubisoft, justar and etc, scam imo.

  7. I will explain this again:

GOG was great until they decided to bow dow and not add Devotion to their store.

  13. Your nickname is stupid. You should take a step back, breathe in, and try to use Steam without any prejudices. Steam IS great.
