A few days ago, modder ‘xoxor4d’ released a Path Tracing RTX Remix Mod for Grand Theft Auto 4. So, I’ve decided to benchmark this mod on our main gaming PC system. How does this new Path Tracing Mod run on a high-end GPU like the NVIDIA RTX 5090? Let’s find out.
For these Path Tracing benchmarks, I used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, and an NVIDIA RTX 5090. I also used Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 581.80 driver.
Since this is real-time Path Tracing, you’ll need a top-of-the-line PC system to run it. And, from my tests, this appears to be one of the most demanding projects in both CPU and GPU. So, make sure to keep that in mind. This isn’t for owners of mid-tier PC systems as it can be taxing on both the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D and the NVIDIA RTX 5090, even at 1440p.
Let’s start with some 4K benchmarks. At Native 4K, we get 21-23FPS. This is what we’ve seen in other path-traced games, so it doesn’t come as a surprise. With DLSS 4 Quality, we are able to get to 34/40FPS. Then, we Frame Gen, we get to 64-76FPS. For the game to appear smoothly, DLSS 4 Frame Gen is a must. Then, with DLSS 4 MFG X3 and X4, we get to 100FPS and 120FPS, respectively.
But what about 1440p? Well, things get more complicated at that resolution. At Native 1440p, we get a minimum of 32FPS and an average of 39FPS. By enabling DLSS 4 Quality, we are able to get to 44-51FPS. Then, with DLSS 4 Frame Gen, we get to 75-92FPS. However, the game suddenly appears to be CPU-bottlenecked. To my surprise, the limiting factor now is the CPU, and not the GPU. We still get some framerate increases with MFG X3 and X4. This is to be expected as Frame Gen can do wonders in CPU-limited titles.
Here is a screenshot at 1440p with DLSS 4 Quality and MFG X4. You can clearly see that our GPU was not used to its fullest. Moreover, none of our CPU cores were maxed out. This means that the mod is not that well-optimized yet. Future versions should look and run better than this.
All in all, this Path Tracing RTX Remix Mod for GTA 4 is only for those who own a high-end PC system. Hell, even those will have to use the full features of DLSS 4. Otherwise, they won’t get a playable experience. As I’ve said, this is a free mod. As such, you should not expect it to be as polished as a full-fledged triple-A path-traced game. The fact that we can even run GTA 4 with RTX Remix is already impressive. And yes, there is definitely room for improvement here. So, let’s hope that xoxor4d will keep working on it.
Before closing, I should note that the Path Tracing Mod would benefit from an HD Texture Pack. Thus, I hope someone will start working on it. Without HD textures, the game can look a bit underwhelming. But when, and if, we get high-quality textures, the game will transform into something truly incredible.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
