Deep Silver has just released Echoes of the End on PC and provided us with a review key. After hearing numerous complaints, I decided to test it on my main PC. And, oh boy. This game will surely frustrate a lot of PC gamers.
Before continuing, I tested the game on an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D with 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, and an NVIDIA RTX 4090. I also used Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 580.88 driver.
Echoes of the End is using Unreal Engine 5. To be more precise, it uses UE5.5.3. So, you’d expect it to run great on PC, right? Well, as the title suggests, something went horribly wrong here.
The game currently suffers from some of the worst stuttering issues I’ve experienced in any UE5 game. Yes, this includes Oblivion Remastered. At the end of the article, you can find a video in which I show these stutters. Towards the end of the video, the game becomes completely unplayable.
I can’t understand how the devs shipped something like this. And I get it. Myrkur Games is a small studio. However, first impressions matter in 2025. And didn’t anyone playtest this? I can’t believe anyone on the team saw those stutters and said, “Yup, it’s fine. Let’s ship it.”
Performance-wise, the game was dropping below 60FPS at 4K/Ultra with DLSS Quality. To get a constant 60FPS experience, I had to use DLSS Performance Mode. Sadly, the game does not support DLSS Frame Gen. I also could not enable NVIDIA Reflex. Funny thing is that the option for it mentions DLSS Frame Gen. So, was the game supposed to support Frame Gen? If so, why is there no setting for it? At least there is support for AMD FSR 3.1 with Frame Gen.
Compared to other recent UE5 games, Echoes of the End seems to offer similar performance. At Native 4K/Ultra, the NVIDIA RTX 4090 was pushing a minimum of 32FPS and an average of 37FPS. This is similar to Mafia: The Old Country and Hellblade 2 Enhanced.
One thing that really stood out was the terrible DoF effect the devs used. I’m not exaggerating here. This is one of the worst DoF effects I’ve ever seen. It causes heavy aliasing on everything and brings major artifacts to all characters’ hair. It looks awful. I also saw several pop-ins while playing. So, I guess we’ll have to wait for UE5.6 to get a more stable image in games that have a lot of grass and trees.
In all honesty, it feels like Myrkur Games pushed an early build of the game (instead of its final version). Or at least that’s the vibe I get from it. So, until they somehow fix the above issues, you should stay away from it.

Bro if it was a realistic medieval setting i'll be one of the first to point out the lack of authenticity but at the second there are dragons and magic in it, you cant blame the writers to include none-white people because it's fictional and it's not tied to any historical era. Speaking of stutters… the DSOG web page has some brutal stuttering when scrolling in the Chrome browser on my android phone (Pixel 8 Pro). This started a week or 2 ago and it does not happen on other sites. I also tested the site on Firefox and there were no stutters. You may want to look into what changed in the last couple of weeks or so.
Pixel 8 is almost 3 years old at this point, and the technology behind site building is always moving forward. You should absolutely upgrade, I heard they have RT features on the new ones, maybe even Frame Gen. That will definitely solve your problem.
Nonsense. Pixel 8 Pro is less than 2 years old and is still a great phone. If you actually read my post, you would know that the scroll stutter is unique to DSOG and when using the chrome browser. I don't have this issue with any other site. So it most likely has to do with some new ads or scripts that the site is running that Chrome does not like. It scrolls like normal in Firefox.

Man, can I ask if your 5600x is limiting your GPU? Is there a bottleneck at 1440p? I'm asking because I have a Ryzen 5950X and an RTX 5080 and I really feel like the GPU is being used at 50%… I'm looking like crazy for a 5800X3D so I don't have to completely change platform, but it seems impossible to find one at decent prices!
Get a 5700X3D. Similar performance for a cheaper price.
I don't think so….with a 5700X3D I would really lose too much performance in the daily usage of my PC, a 5800X3D is already much inferior to my 5950X in non-gaming applications… going all the way down to the 5700X3D I don't think is worth it for me… or am I wrong?

The 7950X3D doesn’t compromise much in terms of non-gaming performance; it offers the best of both worlds. You said you care about non-gaming performance, and you want to up your gaming. The 5800X3D won’t offer that. I’m suggesting that you look into building a new AM5 PC.
Man, if I wanted to completely change the platform, I'd definitely get a 9800X3D or wait for the 10000 series to do so!
In any case, I'd like a gaming-oriented CPU that's also powerful enough for everything else. For my motherboard, the ideal choice is the 5800X3D, while for AM5, the 9800X3D is THE CHOICE.
But unfortunately now I don't have the money to completely revolutionize my system…

I'm not sure but maybe the stuttering from John could be related to AMD FrameGen being enabled as for me this caused major issues. Funnily you don't have any FrameGen option when selecting DLSS, however if you enabled it before when FSR was selected it seems to stay enabled when switching back to DLSS. Once I disabled it, the game seemed to run significantly better. Less fps but a much smoother experience.
I agree with the ugly DOF and also other effects like chromatic aberration etc.
However these can luckily be disabled through Unreal Engine Unlocker (or maybe ini tweaks). While the devs should put options to disable it at the first place there is atleast a workaround for now for those who dislike it as much as me or John.
