The first Global Illumination performance mod for NieR: Automata is now available

Modder ‘Kaldaien’ has implemented DrDaxxy’s Global Illumination performance tweaks into his FAR (Fix Automata Resolution) mod for NieR: Automata. Kaldaien has provided two versions and those who download the Automatic version will have to make sure to migrate to the “Testing” branch.

Once this mod has been installed, PC gamers can press Ctrl+Shift+Backspace to bring up the settings and reduce the values for Global Illumination.

In order to make these changes permanent, PC gamers can browse to the game directory, open FAR.ini with notepad and change the value to whatever you want for Global Illumination (do note that this value requires multiples of 16).

Those interested can download the mod from here.

According to a lot of reports, this mod has significantly improved performance (at the cost of less complex and less accurate Global Illumination solution), so be sure to download it if you’re experiencing performance issues with it.

Have fun!

  1. It’s a shame these mods are popping out of the wood works in the 1st place. And people tlhink FFXV from S/E will be any different on PC?

It’s going to be a bad day for people thinking FFXV will be a “Good” PC Port..

    1. It just shows who the laziest devs are out there, but the weebs that are thirsty for any kind of port will let the quality of the port job slide, so really we’ll hardly get anywhere in terms of devs getting good with their port jobs, the way things keep going like that.

      1. Being a weeb is better than being a pretentious cvnt. It’s funny how you tw@ts talk about these things yet had f*ck all to do with bringing these games over to PC. Yet you’re the first one to whine. How many Japanese games did you buy anyway? I mean if you’re not interested in the game why do you keep commenting on these articles? Nier is a very good port compared to early Japanese PC games which you have never played or had no involvement with, but oh right, excuse me… you have standards and sheeeit. Shove them in your rear as I suggested previously.

        1. Gib you have a lot to learn about me. First off I watch anime, I buy Japanese merch, I buy Japanese games and second, you’re breaking the rules by trying to swear directly at another user.

Also I’m the first to whine?, have you looked around the ent?, or is this the only place on earth that talks about PC port quality?.

if you’re seriously not interested in having a civil discussion with me, then why comment anyway?.

You standards are why we even have obad prot jobs in the first place, so stuff yours mate.

          1. Alright then… let’s have a “civil” discussion. Answer these:

            1. How many Japanese games did you buy in the last two years?

            2. How many Japanese games were available on Steam around 3 years back, according to you? And how many are available now?

            3. What was the first Japanese game you purchased on Steam?

I’ll establish the course of this discussion based on your answers.

          2. 1. Ultimate Ninja storm 3, Storm revolution, Megaman legacy collection, Dragon’s Dogma, FFXIV,Disgaea, jet set radio, Binary Domain, Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 2:OTR, Dead Rising 3, DBZ Xeno, MGS GZ, MGS V, MGR, Legend of Korra (made by Platinum btw), Resi 0, Resi 5, Resi 6, Resi 1.

            2. Asking me to count every single Steam game from the past 3 years and now in total?, seems like a ton of effort for you to easily refute (and I know you will).

            3. Not sure why that specifically matters to the point on talking of prot quality.

If anything really, you’re asking me to do list upon list and do more work, all so you can poke holes and go “ha I was right”, because that’s how a good chunk of these debates always end up as in the end.

          3. 1. Wow I’m impressed! Dead Rising games aren’t Japanese (they are Canadian) but anyway. So now tell me… since you have played them, how do Naruto UNS3, Disgaea and Korra compare to your amazing “standards”?

For reference, I’ll post some pics from the video options menu of those games.

            1. Disgaea: http://pcgamingwiki (dot) com/images/9/9a/Disgaea_PC_-_Graphics.png

            2. Korra : http://pcgamingwiki (dot) com/images/thumb/e/e8/The_Legend_of_Korra_display.png/300px-The_Legend_of_Korra_display.png

            3. DBXV: http://pcgamingwiki (dot) com/images/8/87/Dragon_Ball_Xenoverse_-_Options_-_Adjust_Graphics.jpg

Now please compare those to that of Nier Automata. Just to make it easier for you, I’ll also discount the fact that all three game mentioned above use the anime style, which has lower requirements.

Now let”s consider Capcom’s games. Capcom has been doing PC versions from a long time back. If you had played some of their earlier titles like Resident Evil 2 on PC, you’d have wanted to reconsider your “standards”.

Which mainly leaves Konami’s games which can truly be considered good ports from a relatively inexperienced developer.

            2. Nope, I’m asking for a rough estimate since you claim you’re in touch with Japanese games on PC.

            3. A straight answer would help.

If anything, I’m trying to show you how far Japanese PC games have come, that is all. I don’t get paid to talk sh*t about your views but I do care about facts.

      2. Dark souls 1 had worse port job. But from software improved didn’t they? We got much better port of dark souls 2 and 3.
Nier automata doesn’t have a good PC port but still is a decent port. And I’m hoping for this game to sell well so that we can get future platinum games with much better PC support.

        1. We’ve had MGR and 3 other titles from PG, in that space of time I haven’t seen much improvement, so buying not so great port jobs is basically letting them know that they don’t ened to improve as their games will sell bucketloads anyway.

I’d rather the game have stodgy sales and quite a lot of critique on them, letting the devs know firsthand that they need to shape up and do better, rather than thinking of doing better far later on or even being a complete afterthought.

          1. It’s not a dying genre, not when it and other titles have been selling for years on end, both on consoles and PC.

Also why do we need to see a spam of a genre?, just look at the FPS one, it’s chock full of bad shooters, half baked ones with some good ones in between.

Also everything doesn’t ened to be overly complex for the sake of sating a few elite who like it balls to the wall, we have real means of doing that outside the house though.

        1. Metal gear R also didn’t support features like higher resolutions and also sported a minimal options system.

  2. Several Japanese studios have already worked with Durante (best known for creating DSFix for Dark Souls) to help with their ports. I’d be more than happy to see Japanese devs reach out to the modding community for help/feedback, it’d really benefit all parties. Too bad NieR turned out to be such a poor port, I hear great things about the game itself.

      1. Do you even look around you, or is it the new hip cool thing to bash everyone that doesn’t like what you like or even has a set of standards?.

Inb4 witty quip, because that’s the only path you’re riding down at this point.

        1. Please get back to me with something that invalidates what I said. You clearly haven’t played some of the early Japanese PC games. Nier is godlike in comparison. Port quality can continue to improve if only the target market does.

          1. And how do you know that I haven’t played any Japanese games?, where is your concrete evidence to your claim?.

Also it’s not “godlike” in comparison, even then, comparison to what Japanese port?.

          2. Answer the questions I posed in another comment and you won’t need to explain yourself further.

          3. I like how I have to explain myself to a total stranger, but they don’t have to do zip, totally fair discussion, no doubt about it/s.

          4. So in other words you’re saying you don’t have valid points to make. Kthxbye.

          5. Thank you for admitting that you were wasting my time and full of crap.

last time I waste my effort on someone like you who willingly slanders others and does nothing of his own in return, absolute good for nothing.

          6. Nope. I’m always open to discussion. You’re the one slithering away. Nevertheless I’m typing a response to your other comment. Check back there if you care to have that integrity.

      2. Those were sh*t, this is sh*t with sprinkles. Stop defending poorly optimized junk just because the game itself is great. These are 2 entirely separate issues.

        1. No they aren’t. PC gaming isn’t big in Japan even now. You cannot compare Japanese PC ports to those made in the West. It’s matter of market attraction more than anything else. The fact that you’re getting a better port is solely due to the increase in the players who play Japanese games on PC. Suipply and demand.

          1. “PC gaming isn’t big in Japan even now. You cannot compare Japanese PC ports to those made in the West.” I’m so f*cking of that nonsensical argument. If I’m trying to sell a product an a well established market abroad, it’s my g*ddamn responsibility to learn what those customers expect for their money. Platinum and Squeenix are global companies, they don’t get a free pass just because their little corner of the earth doesn’t play on PC. Console gaming is also on a steady decline in Japan because of mobile dominating it, does that mean they get a free pass for bad console versions too?

“The fact that you’re getting a better port is solely due to the increase in the players who play Japanese games on PC. Suipply and demand.” What in the hell are you even trying to argue? Ok, PC gamers like Japanese games, good on you for figuring that out Sherlock Holmes. That doesn’t mean those same customers don’t expect a well made port. Dragon’s Dogma and Valkyria Chronicles were both fantastic ports and sold well above what most Japanese games have done these past several years. It’s almost like making your port better increases sales.

          2. ” I’m so f*cking of that nonsensical argument. If I’m trying to sell a product an a well established market abroad”

            — There hasn’t been an established market till recently, that’s the whole f*cking point I’m trying to get across.

” Platinum and Squeenix are global companies, they don’t get a free pass just because their little corner of the earth doesn’t play on PC”

            — Platinum is a Japanese company. Squeenix was also primarily a Japanese company which diversified into the Western market through the Eidos acquisition. It’s a matter of company culture and not a matter of having multiple officers around the world..

“Console gaming is also on a steady decline in Japan because of mobile dominating it, does that mean they get a free pass for bad console versions too?”

            — Being on decline is one thing. Being practically non-existent is another. Consoles have a level of penetration in Japanese society that PCs simply cannot match. This is mainly due to Sony being a Japanese company and they are very comfortable in their home turf. The PC is mostly relegated to playing eroge and a handful of MMOs. Which is definitely NOT the case in the West.

“Dragon’s Dogma and Valkyria Chronicles were both fantastic ports and sold well above what most Japanese games have done these past several years.”

            — They were exceptions. Funded by companies who already have tons of experience in the PC market — Capcom and Sega. How many games does Square Enix (the original one, not Eidos) have in comparison?

Also, here is the options screen from Valkyria Chronicles:

            http://pcgamingwiki.com/images/2/24/VC_gfx.png

I don’t see you bashing it but apparently Nier’s options menu has all the problems.

          1. In that case don’t post comments mocking others on account of your dimwitted “standards” that would cause me to retaliate.

        1. You know how long Capcom has been in the PC business right? Did you play Resident Evil 2 back when it came out?

          1. Eurogamer has an article out now basically supporting every one of @Sun Streakers points. You may want to read it before continuing to push forward with your evidently biased viewpoint. Does it really matter if a bad port is by a Japanese dev. anyway? A bad port is a bad port. Deal with it.

          2. You may want to understand the context of this discussion first, which in itself carries over from a previous one. It’s not a matter of good or bad, but a matter of worse or better. Also may I have a link to that article?

          3. Fair enough… I was simply speaking to Nier Automata and it’s “issues”. Which are real and inherent with certain (read: more then I would like to see) Japanese devs. Unfortunately. But I will butt-out now…

          4. Okay, fair point. Also add DMC3 there, that port just reeks, even though Ubisoft actually ported it… I don’t even know how this happened. Didn’t read the comment below.

    1. lmfao i dont think you know the DEFINITION OF POOR PORT. arkham knight, saints row 2 are bad ports. nier is not a abad port. its actually pretty decent. some things not working doesnt make a game a bad port. jesus, why are people so retarded.

  3. “it was a barebones port, not a bad one. its was a 1:1 to console port.”

Yeah, that’s usually the definition of a “bad port”; a port with little to no effort put into it, in order to keep the costs of it down as much as possible.
