Super Mario 64 – First Level Recreated in Unity Engine, Playable in Your Browser

Roystan Ross has recreated the first level of Super Mario 64 in the Unity Engine, and has released it for free to everyone. Yeap, you can actually play this recreation, something that is undoubtedly cool. What’s even more amazing is that this level is playable in your browser, meaning that you won’t have to download anything at all (though there is still an option for a desktop version in case you want one).

As Roystan Ross noted, there are currently no plans to recreate the other levels of Super Mario 64. Still, this demo will give you an idea of what a HD remake could look like.

“I currently do not have any plans to develop this any further or to resolve any bugs, unless they’re horrendously gamebreaking and horrendously simple to fix. This project is provided as-is, and you are free to use it for any purposes you like, with the exception of selling it for profit. “

Those interested can play it from Roystan’s blog (or download the desktop version).

Enjoy!

  1. I’m surprised! The gameplay is fantastic and feels way smoother and more responsive than the original game. It completely destroy the Galaxy series as well. Let’s hope this talented dev make at least one fully functional level with all the stars.

    1. I really liked it for those reasons as well. At the very least it completely destroys how Galaxy performs playing it in Dolphin.

The desktop version even has great controls with a controller including camera controls which for me makes the gameplay even better than the original. Mapping the c-buttons to a thumbstick was always a lot more janky than these true camera controls.

  2. Freaking awesome! Glad it stays to the Nintendo style of look and does not go overboard trying to not be that.

  3. A desktop version is also available below for the two most popular operating systems and some lame one nobody outside of it’s devoted cult following actually likes.

    -_- u wot m8?

  4. I’m glad that the video is long so I can enjoy this a bit without having to install some browser plugin. Why someone would do this with a plugin instead of JavaScript is beyond me.

      1. There’s HTML5 and WebGL, but you have to write it all from scratch (Unity lets you start building your game without much fuss) and it will run much slower since it isn’t native code.
