Roystan Ross has recreated the first level of Super Mario 64 in the Unity Engine, and has released it for free to everyone. Yeap, you can actually play this recreation, something that is undoubtedly cool. What’s even more amazing is that this level is playable in your browser, meaning that you won’t have to download anything at all (though there is still an option for a desktop version in case you want one).
As Roystan Ross noted, there are currently no plans to recreate the other levels of Super Mario 64. Still, this demo will give you an idea of what a HD remake could look like.
“I currently do not have any plans to develop this any further or to resolve any bugs, unless they’re horrendously gamebreaking and horrendously simple to fix. This project is provided as-is, and you are free to use it for any purposes you like, with the exception of selling it for profit. “
Those interested can play it from Roystan’s blog (or download the desktop version).
Enjoy!

Props to this guy! 😀
I’m surprised! The gameplay is fantastic and feels way smoother and more responsive than the original game. It completely destroy the Galaxy series as well. Let’s hope this talented dev make at least one fully functional level with all the stars.
I really liked it for those reasons as well. At the very least it completely destroys how Galaxy performs playing it in Dolphin.
The desktop version even has great controls with a controller including camera controls which for me makes the gameplay even better than the original. Mapping the c-buttons to a thumbstick was always a lot more janky than these true camera controls.
Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed and Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim are coming to PC via Steam this Spring, courtesy of Xseed Games.. enjoy :v http://www.xseedgames.com/news.php?id=236

Wow! Nintendo could make a fortune doing classic remakes that look this good!!!!
Right?!! This dude did an incredible job
Good remake, Kudos to Roystan!
Freaking awesome! Glad it stays to the Nintendo style of look and does not go overboard trying to not be that.
-_- u wot m8?
Omg all your links are down! Damn it!!!!!!
Reading the guy’s blog, he comes off as an immature child.
It’s what one does not what one say that is important.
I put up an additional copy of the game on my website if all the current links are still flooded: http://kotot.org/Mario
I’m glad that the video is long so I can enjoy this a bit without having to install some browser plugin. Why someone would do this with a plugin instead of JavaScript is beyond me.
from when javascript has 3d dev tools?
There’s HTML5 and WebGL, but you have to write it all from scratch (Unity lets you start building your game without much fuss) and it will run much slower since it isn’t native code.
Because running native code i.e. through Unity plugin or an EXE is much faster than doing it through WebGL?
I remember it looking better. 🙁 In reality this looks better than the actual game.
inb4 nintendo takes it down
How do you open the locked box?
