Steam has just passed over 37 million concurrent players

Well, it took Steam a while to set a new record of concurrent players. Back in March 2024, Valve’s service hit 36 million concurrent players. And earlier today, Steam surpassed that record as it had over 37 million concurrent players.

To be more precise, Steam hit 37,266 million concurrent players. So, my guess is that it will take a while until it manages to pass 38 million concurrent players.

Steam 37 million concurrent players

Let’s now take a look at the Top 20 Most Played Games in the last 24 hours. And oh boy, are you in for some surprises.

The most played game right now is Counter-Strike 2, followed by Black Myth: Wukong. Black Myth: Wukong is doing extremely well on Steam. Yes yes, 90% of its sales are reportedly from China. Still, this is irrelevant. The game has sold incredibly well and has become the most-played single-player game on Steam.

In third place we find DOTA 2, followed by Banana. And no, that’s not a joke. Banana is a clicker game, in which you click a Banana. This is a free to play title, and it has Very Positive reviews on Steam. I don’t really know what’s going on here, but this is something that has attracted a huge audience.

In fifth place, we find PUBG: Battlegrounds, followed by GTA5 and Once Human. APEX Legends is in the ninth place and in the tenth place we find Rust.

Before closing, it’s worth noting that Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring and Call of Duty are in the Top 20. We can also find Path of Exile and War Thunder. Civilization VI is also in the eighteenth place.

Finally, Valve’s Deadlock is in the last place. Deadlock is currently in closed beta, however, its participants are able to invite friends. And, as you can see, its beta phase has been huge. So, expect another multiplayer megahit from Valve.

Stay tuned for more!

    1. Not as long as Fortnite keeps raking in billions of dollars but probably the worst that will happen if Fortnite ever fails is the timed exclusives will end and the free games will get cut way back. Publishers like their having their own store but I doubt many make much profit. Right now Sweeney has said that EGS isn't profitable.

It might surprise some to hear that even a great store like GOG barely makes any money. In 2022 they showed a profit of only 1.2 million dollars.

      1. Epic exclusives are decreasing, now of the relevant ones only Alan Wake 2 remains which I got pirated, Epic will never be profitable now it is hated by all PC gamers Epic users instead redeem free games without buying anything, it's over LOL 👍🤣

  1. personally i hate launchers, and my preference is having a library of completely redistributable cracked game that i can keep forever. and if i wanna buy a particular game i dont care about steam or epic games, i just buy the cheaper one. projecting STEAM as the PC master race meme is just a disservice to all PC gamers and its just sucking up to Gabe the fatso.

    1. Never liked Steam since 2004, never will. It's just a form of DRM, although the Friend Invitation to games is a neat feature.

    2. I don't know if digital stores are to blame, but i hate how they store save files nowadays, back then you could easily find your saves in the game directory instead of some cryptic location.

  2. Only one explanation for this.

It has to be all those new Concord players. Steam numbers be just explodin'.

  3. Still Rockstar hasn't announced Red dead redemption for PC FFS its been more than a year since PS4 and nitendo switch launch and even gamescom is over, what is Rockstar's strategy here ??? to make PC gamers hate them more

      1. I know that, i have played it on Xenia on my rtx 4070 laptop, runs good but still i prefer a native PC version using keyboard and mouse over the emulation. By ur logic of not giving money to Rockstar, pirating native PC version will be even more easier than downloading console isos and fideling around with emulators.

        1. if cockstar thinks I'll buy a 14 year old game at full price I think he'll be disappointed LOL 👍🤣

    1. "Steam has just passed over 37 million concurrent players"

steam's customer support though, has a record of being not too good.
still have not recovered from losing a account from them, started a new one until they can get back the old one i had. recovering a lost account is super hard from them. about 2 years it's been for me.

i can only imagine if more steam users are tied to the network their customer support will need to make bigger changes.

    2. Bro played it on emulator, it's so boring.
Weapons sound better compared to rdr2 but that's it.
Play hard west 1&2 for western scratch.

    3. Rockstar doesn't care about PC, didn't care since GTA IV.

Although it was PC platform that made them what they are.

  4. I remember when PC gamers had a spine. When Valve introduced Steam, PC gamers were outraged.

The fact that Valve, a company with live service games and microtransactions, forced a launcher and DRM on you was blasted by players. Valve, a company that had to be dragged in front of an Australian courtroom because they didn't believe in the concept of refunds.

The reason Steam becamse popular has nothing to do with it being a good platform, it was a platform for PC illiterates. When PC gaming became mainstream, you had an influx of computer illiterates, too stupid to figure out how to directly download and update a game from a console or developer. So these console illiterates coming to PC needed a centralised repository like Steam.

Now PC gamers are stuck with Steam, a platform that has built-in DRM. The other 2 platforms, GOG and Epic do not have built in DRM, and are the only real competitors to Steam's quasi monopoly on PC.

If PC gamers still had a spine, they would be blasting the Steam Deck, a Steam ecosystem and walled garden that goes out of its way to complicate using competitor stores. But instead they suck up to Gabe, a fat-ss with 7 yachts who has monopolize PC gaming.

    1. Well that certainly does explain the Console Fanboy attitude many have for Steam. Say anything bad about Steam and many of them lose their minds. Worse yet say anything good about Epic and they REALLY lose their minds.

All Steam really did was end games coming out on hard copies (CDROM, DVD, etc.) and move to a "Games as a Service" format. On Steam you are just a subscriber exactly like Netflix or Disney+ and you don't actually buy games, you buy a subscription to a game.

Don't believe me then go look at the Steam User SUBSCRIBER Agreement

    2. Is always funny how you people claim others to be illiterates and still don't understand that Steam does not have in built DRM, It offers a DRM in case the Developer/Publisher wants to use it, that's very different.

      1. Yes, it offers DRM. It comes with by default because DRM is not the primary function of Steamworks, if offers a lot of features that the developer can if they choose to do so use like MP features with the plataform.

So by your own words, is the developers fault ? Got it. So why are we blaming Valve again ? Look, don't get me wrong, Valve is no saint but if you going to complain about them at least do with something that make sense, otherwise you seem like a delusional person.

PCGamingWiki dosen't have an accurate list on what is and it isn't DRM on Steam. I my self have plenty of games not on the list that are indeed DRM free.

        1. Lets get one thing straight. There is no real number of what games actually use DRM on Steam. You have to manually test each game. PCGamingWiki is not an accurate list, with 5 minutes testing just a few games I have currently instaled i found 5 games that dosen't have DRM and are not listed there.

Buddy did you even read PCGamingWiki or are you just quoting random bullshit, are you even being serious ?

          1. Ok, so you´re just quoting random bullshit got it. I see there is no further point in continuing this conversation

          2. Buddy, the img is clearly factually incorrect, yet you trying to pass as a fact and I'm the "fanbot" ?

Threre is no evidence besides a baseless claim, there is no citation, there is no examples, You understand that anybody can claim anything even on court right ? Just because it shows as an argument dosen't mean it holds any value.

Ironically the img is factually incorrect because games bought on the Epic Store are NOT DRM free! But sure, I'm the pathetic one. yeah right.

          3. So let me get this straight, you contributed to PCGamingWiki but somehow dosen't know that their list of DRM free games are in no way a complete version of said DRM free games on Steam ? Yet you´re still trying to pass as a irrefutable evidence ? LOL, how bad faith can you even be.

          4. What Data ? You don't have the Data. What you have is a claim MADE by EPIC, NOT by VALVE. This is text book creating a source of thin air.

          5. So link the data, because If we´re going by what you´re posting as "proof" to your claim, then the conversation is pointless because it's factually incorrect.

          6. Just like there are Steam fanboys there are also Steam haters. Neither extreme are reasonable. You can debate with either and never get anywhere because they can't see the forest for the tree they are standing behind.

Same goes for any digital store really. Good points and bad points but the thing that is obvious to the vast majority is that Steam is the best store for PC gamers even with it's flaws.

      2. You don't seem to get it. On Steam you just get a licence, that can be revoked any time.

DRM = Digital Rights Management and you are being managed through Steam.

    3. If PC gamers still had a spine, they would be blasting the Steam Deck, a Steam ecosystem and walled garden that goes out of its way to complicate using competitor stores. But instead they suck up to Gabe, a fat-ss with 7 yachts who has monopolize PC gaming.

My man, I absolutely admire your dedication in spreading FUD! XD

Anyway, could you once again explain how the Steam Deck is a walled garden, please?

I'm asking because I just installed on my Steam Deck Deus Ex: Human Revolution (which I had purchased on GOG) via the Heroic Games Launcher, making the whole process super-easy:

BTW, runs absolutely beautiful with highest settings on a SteamOS 3.7 development branch, while using less than 5 Watts of energy on average.

Absolutely stunning for a PC handheld, which will only continue to get better with each SteamOS upgrade for many years to come…

    4. Convenience tops everything in any market (via integration/centralization, plus hitting first, unless you do something stupid like pricing yourself out). That's the rule and the story here, and that's how markets work.
Everything else is far lower in a very secondary place, because people are happy enough to not care.
Throw in Free To Play games that so many players love, and you got it even more against you.
That's the reality at least still for now…

      Is your point valid? Yes.
Even still though, the vocal minorities of enthusiasts have had the power to change things, and while the EU has been much more responsive to fighting back restrictions and anticonsumer practices than the US, this is still evolving and i believe it will get better for the consumer over time, when absolutely everyone has gotten fed up of digital platforms restrictions.

  5. "Black Myth: Wukong is doing extremely well on Steam. Yes yes, 90% of its sales are reportedly from China. Still, this is irrelevant."

I like how schizophrenic you come across in this passage, and at the same time insult the intelligence of your audience.

That being said, it's funny how 4 years ago right wingers where mad at China for taking over gaming (among other things), and now they cheer China as anti woke, brilliant lack of foresight.

    1. They hate China, but hate forced woke garbage even more it seems.

I remember when The New Collosus painted communists as actual good guys, that was ghost writing Sweet Baby taking it a tad too far.

      1. But it is the hate of China that i don't get, they don't project power or anything outside it's borders, even "le China virus" was made with the blessing of USA under Trump administration. We westerners are trained like pavlov dogs to react at phantom outside threats while the enemies at home run havoc. If anything i would hate China for not being imperialistic in a different direction than USA. I guess now is the turn of SJW types to hate China while wishing they can retain power so they can bomb children themselves, it's all so hopeless…
