Star Ocean The Second Story R PC demo available for download on Steam

Square Enix has announced that the PC demo for Star Ocean The Second Story R is now available for download on Steam. In order to celebrate this announcement, the team has also shared a new trailer that you can find below.

Star Ocean The Second Story R has been revitalized with a charming 2.5D aesthetic that combines beautiful 3D environments with nostalgic 2D pixel characters, offering players both a classic RPG and modern gameplay experience.

Players can expect to find some of the original features that made the original release so memorable alongside brand-new gameplay features including fast-paced, real-time combat and battle mechanics to strategically defeat foes, customizable party progression with an array of skills, including Cooking, Art, Metalcraft, and more. Three new difficulty modes have also been introduced including “Earth” which provides a standard experience, “Galaxy” for those looking for a more satisfying challenge, and “Universe” for seasoned players looking to put their skills to the ultimate test.

Star Ocean The Second Story R will release on November 2nd. And, as we’ve already reported, the game will be using the Denuvo anti-tamper tech.

    1. Personally, I think nothing will ever be cozier than the 16-bit era.
      All of these “retro” 2D-3D rpgs have SO many special effects that we can’t even see the screen properly.
      I mean, look at this. What am I even looking at here? And that’s from being the worst example.

      I know I’m getting old, but I’m so tired that modern games rely so much on stupid overdone effects.
      Back in my days, it was all pixel art, and therefore way more restricted.
      I mean, this looks so out of place, mixing “HD” effects with little pixel art characters. Same for some fighting games, like the Guilty Gear ones…
      2D characters with HD effects. It looks weird and ugly.

      1. i agree with you on the part that these games have over the top FX effects causing me almost getting a epileptic attack. But i love the landscapes etc. I too am from the 16bit area, hell even from the 8bit area.
        The pixel art from back then is still very populair and i even have 16Bit gif background.
        Still the mix of HD with pixel art is a strange one.
