Shenmue 1 & 2 are officially coming to the PC in 2018

SEGA has just announced that the first Shenmue games, Shenmue 1 and 2, will be officially coming to the PC in 2018 in one package. According to the publisher, both games will feature Japanese and English voice overs, the choice of classic or modern controls and more.

Shenmue is an action-adventure game created, produced and directed by Yu Suzuki, that came out to Dreamcase in 1999 and its sequel, Shenmue 2, came out in 2001. Both games feature a day-and-night system, variable weather effects, non-player characters with daily schedules, and various minigames, as well as a 3D fighting system similar to Sega’s Virtua Fighter series.

The player controls the teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki as he arrives in Hong Kong in 1987 in pursuit of his father’s killer. His journey takes him to Kowloon and the mountains of Guilin, where he meets a young woman who is part of his destiny.

  1. Well, I can’t be excited anymore when sega announces something for PC. I hope they don’t screw it with drm this time.

  2. Sweet. I still have my complete-in-box copy of the original Dreamcast game plus the original Xbox version of its sequel.

It’s seemingly a low effort bare bones re-release with little more in the way of improvements than upscaled resolution and better texture filtering. However, with it being an official release (as opposed to gamers using a Dreamcast emulator) then we’ll hopefully see the PC modding community produce some great-looking higher resolution textures, etc.

    1. We know they used higher quality assets for Shenmue: The Movie. Wonder if we’ll see an option for anything like that in the game.

      1. Hopefully so but given that it’s Sega then I certainly won’t be holding my breath. With plenty of fans of classic Sega games numbering among the PC gaming fraternity then our hopes will likely rest with the modding community.

  3. Well I guess one more play through for Shenmue I and II is in order. This game makes me miss the Dreamcast every time I see it heh.
