Kotaku has reported that Amazon has spent $50-$70 million on Crytek’s engine. This is definitely good news for the company behind the Crysis series and Ryse.
Here is what Crytek’s co-founder Faruk Yerli said in mid-March about this deal:
“It was a huge one, probably the biggest one. I can’t say anything more in detail, but hopefully we’ll be able to announce it with the partner soon.”
Back in mid 2014, Crytek faced major financial issues and came close to bankruptcy. Crytek later on released a press release, claiming that thing were improving and that it had secured – back then – enough capital from a new unnamed source.
Whether that unnamed source was Amazon or not remains a mystery.
It will be interesting to see how Amazon will take advantage of Crytek’s engine.
Stay tuned for more!

This comes after they bought Double Helix back in February, and before that rumors that they want to enter the console market. They definitely have something planned.
I forgot about that purchase. Will be interesting to see what they do.
More of a move into VR perhaps.
They also bought Twitch, Amazon’s moving into gaming but I doubt it goes much further than Amazon Fire TV. If anything they’ll probably just make future iterations of Amazon Fire TV more gaming centric.
I read on kotaku the “gamers guide” as they call themselfs…. that it is better than civ 5 with the ……
Sorry i had to go there. obviously i dont read kotaku, EVER.
Now putting the numbers in line, crysis 3 costed about 77 million so they didnt spend that much considering how bad crytek is doing right now.
“crysis 3 costed about 77 million”
Are you sure?? I’d believe that Crysis 2 cost that much because of going multiplatform and its long, troubled development from 2007 to 2011+ (DX11 PC patch).
The idea that a copy paste sequel that didn’t address any of Crysis 2’s fundamental problems somehow cost more than 50 million to make, that’s ludicrous. If it’s true then no wonder they have financial problems.
killzone 2 costed 75 i think
Did you mean to say Killzone 3? Killzone 3 would be comparable to Crysis 3 since it’s basically just Killzone 2 with a new coat of paint, just like C3 is C2 with some tweaks.
No kilzone 2
More reason for Crysis 3 not to be that expensive.
Still have hope for this studio, after all it’s Crytek who give us Crysis back in 2007.
And Far Cry in 2004!
😀
Yeah!
Crytek has some very very talented individuals which resulted in CryEngine…an engine far and way beyond anything else that was out there back then.
Yes but I do hope they learn from their mistakes and don’t turn towards EA + Consoles path.
Crysis 4: Amazonia
get out !
Hey have you ever been to Jack Kent Cooke Stadium? Oh wait, now it’s called FedEx Field…
O.o
I tried laughing…but I couldn’t! 🙁
Licensing CE can’t cost 50 million so what are they paying for? Is Crytek making a game for them? Is Amazon launching its own console?
