Juniper Research has contacted a new research, according to which the digital games industry will generate software revenues of just over $80 billion this year, rising to $104 billion by the end of 2018. The majority of this growth will stem from the contributions made by the PC market, with this industry alone accounting for 42% of games revenues this year.
According to the press release we got, mobile platforms will account for ever increasing contributions, with a market share approaching 35% by 2020. Meanwhile, driven by consumer uptake and software purchases from the latest generation of games consoles, software revenue generated by this segment will reach $27 billion by 2018, up from an estimated $21 billion this year.
Juniper’s new research, Worldwide Digital Games Market 2015-2020, is described as the most comprehensive industry report to date, covering the Mobile, Tablet, PC, Console, Handheld, VR and Cloud platforms.
Contrary to the rumours of its impending demise, Juniper believes that the console industry will continue to evolve to take advantage of new technological opportunities, despite the platform already reaching its 8th generation.
According to research author Lauren Foye:
“As digital purchases gain favour with consumers, we will see a drive in sales during the lifecycle of the current generation of consoles. Newly emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality will aid in consumer adoption, as the console continues to evolve to become the core home entertainment centre.”
Juniper also expect cross-platform integration to prove a crucial addition to console games, with Microsoft’s planned addition of Windows 10 to the Xbox One in November enabling play between PC and Console in the upcoming title, Fable Legends.
Additionally, the mobile games industry has seen impressive uplift over the past few years, largely due to the popularity of ‘freemium games’, whereby users make in-app purchases in games such as Clash of Clans, Candy Crush and Game of War. Juniper has forecasts that this trend will continue, with mobile and tablet revenues approaching almost 35% of total game revenues by 2020.

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. PC MASTER RACE!! PC WILL DESTROY CONSOLES AND WILL BECOME THE ONLY GAMING PLATFORM! MUAHHAAHHAHHAHAHAHAH !!! PC MASTER RACE!!
Consoles are still massively outselling PC games, Nobody on PC buys Physical copies of games due to Steam. Console gamers buy both.
Console gamers buy mostly retail while PC gamers buy most games digital(steam). That why most console gamers sales are from retail whie most pc sales are digital.
pc gamers only have steam.or they buy it from shady sites like g2a.that buy stolen cd keys and they sell keys from 3rd rate countries.on steam pc AAA titles cost as much as consoles at launch.
yes i suposse the new fifa sells more on consoles than pc, that doesnt mean its good or it makes more profit due to royality fees and more expensive development.
AAA pc game on pc are as much os console at launch.i love to throw that in their face then they say g2a.i say to them gl with you Russian cd key hope it works…lol
I cant remember tha lastime I went to Walmart and bought a game for my xbox one.
MY FOOT CLAN ARMY WILL DESTROY THE CONSOLES
What do we call mobile gaming? What is below peasantry?
Peasant children.
Those who destroy pc, mostly ignorant parents who think games are causing viruses.
Good. Maybe devs should read this before doing crappy pc ports thinking it’s not going to sell OR not even porting the game to pc.
Also, console players most of the time, buy their games on discs and when they’re done with it they just resell it to best buy or ebgames. So the game ends up costing less. Nice argument concerning VR.
This is good, but at the same time kinda bad, since digital sales doesnt produce the same quantity of jobs as physical copies does, I think the only way stores could survive is selling hardware.
“since digital sales doesnt produce the same quantity of jobs ”
WHO CARES
Also screw gamestop.
They will at some point just like they doing now with always online.
lol the only platform that uses digital sales primarily is leading.inmagine that. good job on writing about something we already know.why not also write about the fact that pc’s use graphics grads..lol.I hate these boost the master race ego articles.rolf
I wouldn’t say console gamers are resistant to buying new hardware, peripheral sales are ridiculous on consoles Scuff controllers and the Xbox One Pro controller sales are pretty good indicators of that. Console gamers are just very resistant to upgrading to the next generation because it is a larger chunk of change to for out at one time. I mean look how much money people wasted on Rockband ( 2 Guitars, Drum set, Mic, Keyboard, etc).
Even PC gamers are hesitant to doing a total rebuild, opting to replace individual components over time.
it’s not so much a Console vs PC thing, but more of a psychological “It hurts more to spend $600 right now than 4 payments of $150 over 4 months” in the end you pay the same amount, but just not at once.
