Morrowind Enhanced Textures is a must-have mod that upscales textures by 4X with ESRGAN technique

Modder ‘DassiD’ has released a must-have mod for all those that want to replay The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. As its title suggests, Morrowind Enhanced Textures is a HD Texture Pack for this classic Elder Scrolls games that upscales the original textures by 4X with the ESRGAN technique.

In case you weren’t aware of, Enhanced super resolution generative adverserial networks, or ESRGAN, is an upscaling method that takes an low-res image and adds realistic details to it. By doing it over several passes with the goal of fooling its adverserial part, it will usually produce an image with more fidelity and realism than past methods.

In order to showcase the visual improvements of this technique, and how close to the original material it manages to stay, DassiD released the following comparison screenshots.

As said, this is just a HD Texture Pack so don’t expect better shaders, lighting or other modern-day techniques. Still, this pack (which weights around 1GB) is essential for all those that want to replay this game.

You can download the Morrowind Enhanced Textures pack from here.

Have fun!

  1. well the article said “By doing it over several passes” so maybe it has to do with you running it only once

  2. wow ESRGAN is looking pretty impressive, would love to see this implemented in the RE1 Remake Remaster and other games.

  3. This is beautiful because it’s more than just a new tech gimmick, it’s actually a “HD remake” done right. Adding detail to the original textures, retaining their aesthetics, rather than replacing them with different hues and material qualities that change the feel of the game entirely. This is basically how Morrowind looks in the memory of players who last played it decades ago any way. This is the detail we imagined to be there any way, and now it’s actually there. Beautiful.
