Lighting Artist ‘Stayd‘ is currently working on an overhaul lighting mod for Dark Souls 2. This mod aims to come close to – or even surpass – the pre-release version of FromSoftware’s title. In order to showcase some of the changes, the modder released some comparison screenshots.
In case you weren’t aware of, the pre-release version of Dark Souls 2 featured a more advanced lighting model. However, and mainly due to the fact that consoles were unable to run the game, FromSoftware replaced it with a simpler one. Unfortunately, the PC version was also a victim of this downgrade.
As we can see, there are some visual differences between the vanilla and the modded versions of Dark Souls 2. However, I’m almost certain that some gamers may not like these lighting changes. On the other hand, there will be some that will be delighted by these changes.
There is currently no ETA on when the mod will come out. As always, though, we’ll be sure to keep you posted about its progress.
Enjoy the following comparison screenshots. Vanilla version is on the left, whereas the modded version is on the right.

Still not even close to the level of graphical fidelity shown off before launch but hey, even this is good enough in my book.
nice reshade
This is a mod, not Reshade preset…
Nice brain.
thank you
Best game in the series in my opinion. I’ve spend 110h in this game on K+M. Highly recommended. I will try this mod for sure.
How? Km was not even playable for me
DS2 is the most varied in terms of locations and enemys. It also have the best combat and art style. Awesome PvP and the best DLCs in the series. I don’t know how K+M is not playeble for you and ofc i was talking about Scolar of the first sin Edition of Dark Souls 2.
Well, never mind my specific problem of the lock on not working, but there arent even keyboard button prompts
Why even bother after so long i don’t know. But it looks great!
Stayd does good work. He has also done lighting for Skyblivion and has been working on this mod for awhile now. He sometimes streams it on Twitch
This is an actual mod that changes the game’s lighting, and no, you can’t get the same result with ENB/Reshade post processing…
after reading this i found this modder’s channel on twitch and i watched one of his streams, you can’t get the same results with reshade changing the lighting is different than adding bloom and ambient light + some color grading (enb can get similar results but still not as good, the problem is enb doesn’t work with scholar of the first sin ).
In the stream he also added some clutter, some plants i think, ruins, .. he said he want’s to fix some enemy/item placement problems so it’s not just a simple “reshade”.
They should make a mod like this for Dark Souls 3 as well, that game have less dynamic shadows than 2.
Damn
Nice
I don’t know about this. It loses some of that DS gloom to me. Looks a little washed out.
different but not necessarily better.
Absurd sh*t, much like every other graphics overhaul mod produced by people who don’t have the first idea about art direction.
