Doom RTX released; mod bringing real-time ray tracing to the classic Doom game via the Vulkan API [UPDATE: Fake]

Modder ‘doom_rtx’ has released a mod that all owners of NVIDIA’s Turing GPUs will appreciate. As its title suggests, Doom RTX brings real-time ray tracing effects to the first Doom game. The modder has used the Vulkan API and you’ll need at least an NVIDIA RTX 2060 in order to run it.

According to the modder, this remaster demonstrates the features of RTX. Alongside the new ray tracing effects, Doom RTX comes with improved texturing, as well as other changes and improvements.

In order to run Doom RTX, you will need an original game/iwad. Both the Steam and the GOG versions are currently supported. You will also need an NVIDIA RTX GPU. All graphic cards below them will not be able to run this or will display incorrect lighting/glitches and very low framerates.

Now while this is not as advanced as the official mod for Quake 2, it’s a mod I’ve been really looking forward to. I’m also looking forward to a similar ray tracing mod for Doom 3. Do note that Doom RTX is more advanced than your typical Reshade Ray Tracing mods.

Going into more details, Doom RTX uses ray tracing for global lighting effects, including realistic reflections, refraction, shadows, ambient occlusion and global illumination. In other words, this is a must-have for all Doom classic fans.

The modder has released some screenshots to showcase the new ray tracing visuals of classic Doom. In these screenshots, you will immediately notice the better lighting effects (as well as the light bouncing effects).

You can download the first version of Doom RTX from here.

Have fun!

UPDATE:

According to reports, this mod is based on the banned Doom Remake 4. Some users claim that the “texture_lights.wad” file from both releases is the same. As such, there is a chance that this mod may not feature proper ray tracing effects. After examining two videos, we found some similarities and some differences between Doom Remake 4 and Doom RTX. Therefore, we are issuing this update to inform you about the possibility of it being fake. On the other hand, the modding team claims that it has not stolen anything. Moreover, the modding team claims that this mod is indeed using ray tracing effects.

UPDATE 2:

Upon further investigations, it appears that this mod is indeed based on Doom Remake 4, and does not use real-time ray tracing. This mod uses GZDoom which does not feature any ray tracing capabilities. This very same mod was uploaded on ModDB back in June 2019 and was taken down by its moderators. However, this time the ModDB moderators were not quick enough to delete this new entry. So yeah, while this mod improves visuals, it basically borrows a lot of stuff from other mods. Not only that, but it does not feature any ray tracing effects. Bummer.

    1. C’mon man its 0.4K…it’s all transposed, 4.0 -> 0.4!

      P.S. – I know that is a STUPID comment…sry I am too f**KIN bored!

      1. Wow, look at the free and passionate mods of Quest mods for Skyrim and the like, somehow you would think a Paycheck would inquire passion all the more, well I guess when you have sheep, you don’t really need passion, sad .

        1. I’m sure all the mods you put out were full of passion. Wait, what’s that? You contribute nothing and call others sheep. hahaha, keep on bahing, it’s normal for sheep.

  1. Erm…. I guess. When you’ve introduced a good amount of new assets to show off “RTX”, it kind of defeats the point.

  2. This mod is clearly fake. The lightening files are identical to files from banned “doom Remake 4” mod. Filesszise and hash is dientical. The creator has nothing modificated on this build. Gzdoom is still the same as original and lightening effects are nothing RTX. The hash value is identical to the files from gzdoom website and the files from “doom remake 4! mod. No RTX inside. It´s fake! Looking at this https://www.moddb.com/mods/doom-remake-4/downloads/dr4! it has the same lightening effects and its clearly non RTX. The lightening mod is stolen from this release.

  3. I like it. Looks good and plays nice. Huge improvement.

  4. Ahahaha so many people got fooled by the fake RTX. Just because there’s a bunch of standard blurry reflections on the floor and walls, you assumed it’s RTX.

  5. I’m not saying test every mod you showcase, some are pretty straight forward but at least test the ones that claim they’re RTX. All I had to do is start it to see it runs smooth on my non RTX gpu.
Of course the lack of reflections was a dead give-away too. So, I guess, the false title could’ve been avoided from the get-go.

    1. Actually, it was more complicating than that. There are reflections and there are some “simulated” ray-tracing effects. For instance, I could swear this was light bouncing effects -> https://i.imgur.com/Cqe1sCq.jpg

Moreover, the reflections appear higher res when you increase the rendering resolution. This is something we’ve been witnessing in all ray tracing games (reflections are blurrier at lower resolutions). Normally, and in case we were dealing with “normal” reflections, you wouldn’t notice sharper reflections by simply increasing the rendering resolution (you’d have to increase the resolution of the reflections). Here are two screenshots in which you can clearly see the more refined reflections (open them in new tabs. The first is at 2560×1440 and the other is at 3840×2160). Also, notice the HUGE performance hit on the RTX2080Ti.

Now while there appears to be some sort of ray-tracing effects, all of them were featured in an experimental version of Doom Remake 4 (they are NOT available in V2.981). That was what basically convinced me that this is a copy (or an enhanced version) of Doom Remake 4.

    1. right, cause a graphically updated doom 1 is nothing to find impressive… i swear, people are just giant crybabies like Sr_Chalice over here.

  6. This is why I’ve been clowning ray-tracing from the start, it barely makes a difference and games can looking beyond great without ray tracing to the point that people can’t tell the difference between ray traced and normal. Ray-tracing reminds me of that marketing scam that sega did when they claimed the genesis had “blast processing” which ended up being a coding thing, not a special processor. Ray-tracing reminds me of that, so many people believed it, so many were suckers.
