Modder ‘gamehacker’ has created a standalone version of Doom Reborn and released its pre-beta version 1.61. Doom Reborn is a total conversion of the original Doom Series, and the goal is to remake the original Doom and Doom 2 games in the idTech4 engine with new textures and new models for the original weapons and monsters, as well as with recreated and re-textured maps from these classic first-person shooters.
As the modder noted, Doom Reborn pre-beta version 1.61 features an unfinished version of Map10 of Doom 2 that players can try to finish off. Moreover, the mod includes Dafama2k7’s Pre-Beta Version 1.6 mod and gamehacker has done some tweaks and changes to improve lighting and colours in various areas. It’s also worth noting that Parallax Occlusion Mapping is enabled by default.
Those interested can download the mod from here. Do note that in order to save in this standalone release, you will need to use the patch that is included in this mod (which will replace Brent’s DoomReborn.exe & Gamex86.dll With Jonny’s versions).
Surprisingly enough, Doom Reborn does actually play like Doom 1 and 2. We’ve seen in the past various attempts to remake these classic shooters in newer engines (and in the Doom 3 Engine), however this is by far the best mix of Doom 1/2 and Doom 3.
Below you can find a really old video that showcases the previous version of Doom Reborn. Obviously, it does not represent the latest pre-beta version and – as I’ve already said – gamehacker has done some lighting and colour improvements to the maps (so they can feel more like the original maps).
Have fun!

I think no one has motion sickness in this comment section, but so much headbob is just annoying
Amazing how people can waste their time playing something this old.
C’mon, let’s evolve already, there are plenty of good new games to play.

I have more fun with Brutal Doom 2 than most new releases. Gameplay takes a backseat to flashy graphics now.
project brutality is better
Then play that. The good thing is … there is ENOUGH for every taste 🙂
I guess you are a 5 years old…
Nope, just 2 and a half yo. Yet, didn’t stop in time and can play games from this era instead of pretending only the old ones were good.
Go play your Pong then!
” let’s evolve already, there are plenty of good new games to play.”
Modern shooters with the exception of doom 2016 and maybe dusk dont have such good level design.
i dont know.. amid is the poor version of “heretic”
its almost as if…you are implying that heretic was more complex and well made than “modern games”.
Proving my point.
isnt desync roguelike with proceduraly generated levels.
How can you say that? People still play chess too. Doom is still very good, and yes, I know that we have Doom 2016, Halo, CoD, CS:GO, Half-Life, Portal, Bioshock, Skyrim, The Witcher, Overwatch, Destiny… but Doom Classic will always be awesome. Just install some graphic mods and you’re good to go.
No man, I’m not talking about the graphics, that’s not what makes a good game. I’m talking about the game itself to be dated and boring. Of course it will be fun for those who like it, but be honest… Can you play this game for more than 30 minutes? I mean, people say that it’s amazing only because it’s a classic, but when it comes to play it, no one does more than a couple of minutes. It’s dated, it’s from our grandpa’s chilhood. I loved to play this back in the past, but there’s so many great games today that is impossible for me to get interested by this old project.
And for the chess you mentioned, it’s not a game that will ever change, unlike the one we’re talking about.
Man I can easily play more than two hours of Doom, Quake, Blood and Duke Nukem if I got time to this. The community is still very good, you really should search for them in Facebook. “…it’s from our grandpa’s childhood.” okay… that’s enough.
that freaking view bob
Very Good!!! I need to play this!!!
I wouldn’t say sh*tty, but pointless
At this point GZdoom is more capable than IDtech 4.
really? It must of come a long way
Absolute waste of time.
no point in this. the source-ports community already did a great job revamping the graphics and the experience of the original calssics. besides, someone tried to convert the original Blood with the Doom 3 engine and the project was eventually abandoned because of the lack of interest. it is just unnecessary.
Really cool, I like the new animations. After level 1 , I tried to save game and it says “it’s a feature coming soon”. I’ll try it again someday once they get that fixed.
