DiRT 3 Complete Edition Will Get A New Mod That Aims To Offer Realistic Lighting

Our reader ‘Oomek’ has shared a video, showing a WIP mod for DiRT 3 that aims to make the game’s lighting a bit more realistic. As Oomek noted, many shaders have been rewritten to look natural. This is still a WIP project, therefore there is currently no link in order to download it. Enjoy the video after the jump!

  1. So I’ve been playing FO4 for a lot of hours now and I feel like FO4’s map is much smaller than Skyrim’s. It actually feels too compact as it feels like a few meters of walk and there’s already a new site waiting to be discovered. There are no long walks unlike in Skyrim. Maybe this is the reason why Todd Howard didn’t directly answer the map size question.

      1. And this is one of the reasons why I strongly think DSOG should have its own forum. This Disquis thingy only get us so far….

          1. Sure, someone was doing that a few weeks ago so i thought it was just the same thing. 😛 Forum can be useful for sure.. i just wish they can make it somehow work with Disqus ;o

        1. Disqus is very convenient because you can have one account that works on many sites. Also, having to visit a forum and search for a thread about every news would be cumbersome.

          1. Well my idea was that the forum could handle everything BUT the news. People could start threads and discuss everything they had on their mind, instead of going offtopic in the news comment section.

      2. LOL XD
I’ve been waiting for DSOG to have a forum for a loong time. I don’t think John’s interested to put up one 🙁

    1. Comparison shots will come when we set up a profile on moddb. There is still a lot of work to do, redo some trees, roads etc. Btw, that’s the first public video and it’s for people who already played Dirt 3 and remember how tragic lighting it has.

        1. The main reason is that it’s too early for any comparisons because we are still changing a lot in game’s weather files. This mod release announcement wasn’t planned so bear with us just a bit longer and let us prepare a proper mod website when we decide it’s ready for comparisons 😉

          1. If a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing great.

My problem are the mods that do not have any representation of its quality.

    1. No, I’m afraid not, it’s not a postprocess like sweetFX, or ReShade, it modifies the original shaders and textures. But hey, we have started modding Dirt 2 aswell so who knows, maybe we will finish that one too.

          1. Considering it’s not a finished game it would be pointless to mod it now. Although we would be happy to help the devs if they invite us to do so 😉

          2. It actually depends on the final state of the game, not on CodeMasters consent. But obvoiusly I wouldn’t mind to be involved in a development process.

  2. It looks as good as DIRT Rally. Actually it’s no surprise. The utter trash quickzscopez cod hommie graphics full of overused bloom, chromatic aberration and lens flares (which made it looks like a shtty cod quickzscopez edit in sony vegas) is gone! hooray!

With this mod it looks clean, crips and great! gj Oomek!

  3. Would play Dirt 3 again when this mod is released! Thank u! beautifully done! This is what I expect from the PC version of Dirt 3 when it’s released back then.

  4. Thank you for responding(wish there was a way to private message?), my
main issue in the game is the green tint. If i edit the “postprocess’
folder’s “effects” file i am able to remove the tint. but when in game
the game in geral has a very low contrast/brightness which makes me
think i am disabling the tint affect entirely since i am only editing
via notepad and not thru hex?. again my apologies for the off topic but i
came across this Mod today and am excited about the possibilities

    1. That green tint and overall muddiness is caused by many factors: tonemapping, LUT palettes, vignette, scene lighting, etc. Editing the binary xmls in notepad is a very bad idea as you may affect many parameters at once by editing just one number. That’s why I wrote an app for editing Dirt’s xmls. Maybe I will release is some day after I add all the neccessary exception handling. Be patient please, It shouldn’t take long now as the latest 3DMigoto wraper has got almost all we need to release the mod. We are just perfectionists and we don’t have a deadline, hence the delay 🙂

        1. How long before we can get this mod? How much percentage wise is this complete?

I’d LOVE to just have the Postprocessing folder from you as i just want the green tint gone and when i disable the postprocessing folder. the game looks so much better but loses alot of other effects

          1. The mod is 95% complete, so not long I hope. I’m rewriting now all trees shaders (adding subsurface scattering and fixing self shadowing, something I’ve come up with recently.

          2. oH OK VERY COOL. iVE DONE SOME WORK IN REMOVING THE GREEN TINT BY USING RESAHDE AND SWEETFX BY USING THE SEPHIA TO ADD NUETRALITY WITH GREYS AND THEN THE TONEMAP TO REMOVE THE MOST ANNOYING COLOR IN DIRT 3…orange
