It appears that 2018 is the year of battle-royale (which is something we’ve expected after the incredible success of both Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds). And according to the latest rumours, both Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and Battlefield 2018 (codenamed Battlefield V) may feature such a mode.
Let’s start with Call of Duty Black Ops 4. Polygon reported that this new COD title may not feature any single-player campaign. Instead, Treyarch will focus on the game’s multiplayer and Zombie modes. And if this turns out to be true, I’ll be really upset because I kind of enjoyed those mind-less single-player campaigns. Furthermore, Eurogamer reported that Raven may be working on a battle-royale mode for Black Ops 4.
On the other hand, VentureBeat reported that DICE is experimenting with a battle-royale mode and may add in new Battlefield game. However, and contrary to Black Ops 4, Battlefield 5 will retain its single-player campaign. Moreover, this battle-royale will most likely not be available at launch and may be added after the game’s release via a free content update.
These battle-royale modes have not been confirmed by Activision or Electronic Arts, so take them with a grain of salt!

One of the problems with these Battle Royale games is that a Publisher can pull the plug on their servers at any time. Basically you are just leasing the game. At least with CoD games in the past you could come back to it whenever you liked and replay the campaign if you wanted to. I have a bias toward single player though. Probably puts me in the minority. There is obviously considerable interest in the Battle Royale type games or they wouldn’t be getting made.
Single Player mode is kind of actually fading slowly, in my opinion.
We should still be getting decent SP campaign games in future, but if the Dev/publisher thinks that the “Battle-Royale” mode will be more profitable to them, then they might shift the focus, manpower and resources to develop such kind of Online Arena gameplay style, imo.
Well if you think games will survive from just shooting others like a braindead your wrong, battle royale games already dying, what more can developers give you without battle royale …nothing, single player(campaigns) will not die
Okay yes, you are correct as well, but I didn’t say SP mode will surely DIE for sure.
I was just being a bit pessimistic….
ohh
SP games aren’t going anywhere. The only problem SP games are facing is that they don’t make as much money as MP games with microtransactions, so there’s less interest in developing that particular type of game by greed-oriented AAA publishers.
Of course, we’re talking about the people who jump on the latest bandwagon every chance they get, so, yeah, obviously they’re investing heavily in Battle Royale games, though they’ll inevitably (as usual) come in too late, with some mediocre tacked-on entry that’ll quickly fade into oblivion as it well deserves to, without any particularly notable exception, I expect.
The real problem is the SP games that are being made by AAA studios are getting hijacked by SJW agendas, like the around-the-corner “The Last God of War: The Uncharted Dark Souls Edition” game which styles itself as a “sequel” but is most obviously an agenda-pushing reboot.
Either that, or they’re generic “safe zone” games designed with little-to-no actual innovation, loads of dull, tedious cinematics, and a series of “feel good” quick-time events, designed to give you the illusion that you’re actually accomplishing something. Because, apparently, that’s exactly what people want these days….. And then they b*tch about SP games not making enough money. Well, sh*t, I wonder why that is – /s.
Thanks for your informative reply !
CoD still has no dedicated servers, I wonder how they’re going to pull that off.
“” I’ll be really upset because I kind of enjoyed those mind-less single-player campaigns “”.
Same here, as I only play SP story modes. And, apart from this I doubt this so-called Battle-Royale trend is going to end soon.
I expect more games Devs to follow suit, come 2019 and beyond. Very upsetting though.
No more CoD campaigns featuring Kevin Spacey? Press F to show respects.
“Polygon reported that…”
Remember to engage an ad-blocker if clicking that link! Obviously ensure to whitelist DSOG.
Okay, too many advertising links it seems ?
Or, any serious threat as well while browsing that website, just in case we “accidentally” click on one of the ads ?
Nothing like that. Using an ad-blocker on Polygon will simply stop you from indirectly funding the SJW cancer. A site that many use an ad-blocker on for the initial reason you’ve stated would be PC Gamer because that place, especially so the mobile site, is swamped with intrusive ads.
Okay….Point noted….
I see there’s also a “Eurogamer reported that” link.
After that site’s thoroughly shameful review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance by a particularly vile SJW (the “Senior Staff Writer”, no less) that even their site membership was overwhelmingly appalled by in response then I’d definitely add Eurogamer to the list of cancerous sites to ad-block.
Digital Foundry can be accessed at YouTube so there’s no reason to bother with the console-centric, ethically challenged and SJW-infested Eurogamer anyway.
Ouch, that really hurts if it’s true. Thanks for all the heads-up guys !
Theres a reason you don’t go to these official “professional” websites. You could find the same news on my site or DSOG with actual legit reviews.
Nah we’re nothing yet, I wouldn’t even bother. Can’t get my writers to do anything so it’s all me right now.
Just checked with my Ad Blocker-
Pc Gamer- 13 Ads blocked!
Polygon- 36 Ads blocked!
kotaku- 13 Ads blocked!
Eurogamer- 23 Ads blocked!
And this is only just from there homepage!
And they wonder why people keep using Ad Blockers, maybe if we weren’t swamped with crap we wouldn’t need to use them.
Really annoying though that a lot of sites are now spamming the screen with messages like- “We notice you’re using an ad blocker, We can’t continue offering our work for free without advertising. Please disable your ad blocker.”
They have to realise a balance is needed when it comes to advertising, no one likes getting Ad overload!
PS: John, have you reported about Far Cry 5 being cracked yet? Denuvo x64, VMProtect, EAC and Ubisoft’s uPlay could not save it, only took 3 weeks for crack! KKW will be in meltdown again!
Wow, thanks for the info.
Yes, honestly speaking it becomes very annoying when websites solely rely on advertising, by posting too many Ads….
Minimum 85 ad revenues denied to those sites.

I think the ads are where they make their operating money but it seems that a lot of sites abuse that to the point that you pretty much need to run ad-block. What I don’t understand is a site like Newegg running ads. They make a profit on the merchandise they sell so why the ads.
I guess there are worse things out there. A Tech Site a while back was asking if it was agreeable to use peoples CPUs for mining while they were on the site to prevent the need for more ads.
By the way, I heard KKW got buried beneath the rubble, after a building collapsed on him…
But worry not, DENUVO’s team is on it’s way for his rescue, Lol.
/s
I wonder if John banned him again. I haven’t seen the guy around in a while and I would be surprised if KKW decided to mellow out a little on his own. Assuming of course he really believed all that he was spewing here and not just on a crusade to troll us all.
Nope, I doubt John has done anything to his account.
Maybe he found some other outlet/website to spew out his nonsense, and/or he might be busy with some other work/chore….
So called “anti-sjws” are just as cancerous.
i’ll withlist DSOG when John get rids of the goddamn langauge filter
I just want toi point out how silly this thread is because DSOG literally uses like 90% CPU at all times on my work machine. Don’t know how much mining and crap they’re doing but I hope it’s worth it.
Why are ALL corporation so lazy.. I saw corporations and not just the gaming industry because it infects across all mediums. Basically Battle Royale is the new survival Horror. Damn this is so shameful… The music industry does it, The movie Industry. I wonder what industry doesn’t this lazy rubbish.
Money
It’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
Good taste in music.

Just… wow!
One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. They are one of those rare groups that almost all of their songs are really good. Lot of real talent there.
Indeed. I’d not seen that particular performance of said song before so I was blown away by its majesty. Especially so the style of the vocal delivery by Gilmour and those two backing singers. I see that Rick Wright, RIP, was playing so that places it as being over 10 years ago and yet it looks like it could have been recorded yesterday.
We are slowly heading to e3 with most major studios have NOTHING to show, ubisoft has released its asscred and far cry so they dont got much to show. Cliffy b is mad that epic games took his devs away from him after his trash game flopped and fortnite became popular when they introduced pubg mode.
Truly, the industry is heading down the crapper.
“the industry is heading down the crapper”
But Destiny 2’s next DLC is slated to arrive on May 8th! ?
No, they think the market demands it, as a result of which they then inevitably end up over-saturating the market. They’ve used the same old trick over-and-over by now that it’s beyond obvious; they throw sh*t at the wall and see what sticks.
Brittany response, Thank you. That’s basically what my entire post was about. You summed it up nicely. Battle Royale is the new Survival Horror/Survival.
Yeah sure, thats just what we need
Oh, joy……………………..
So Treyarch cancelled the campaign because they couldn’t finish it before the release date? Are they becoming as lazy as Bungie?
Indeed. It takes so much time and effort to cobble together 5 hours worth of set piece, pylon AI, scripted events, that they couldn’t muster it over the past 3 years I guess.
I know “Black Ops” has become a new brand for their CoD but after the horrible BO3 campaign I wonder if they’re stuck in that universe and can’t come up with a new story.
Looking at how TRASH the campaign was on black ops 3, seems like it.
True. They have 3 years to deliver a product. It has been like that since CoD Ghosts I think.
I think Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is going to have a single player, and probably they launch this rumor to prepare you for the next COD 2019.
LMAO so stupid I can’t believe they didn’t do it in WW2.
“Instead, Treyarch will focus on the game’s multiplayer and Zombie modes. And if this turns out to be true, I’ll be really upset because I kind of enjoyed those mind-less single-player campaigns.”
Black ops 3 campaign was TRASH , as opposed to black ops 2 campaign that was awesome. SOOO i dont care about this. Also battlefront 2 campaign YUCK….. But its funny we have come full circle and PUBG devs wont be able to sue absolutely everyone HAHAHAHAHA
This “AAA” games getting cheaper without SP campaign…no need to hire Hollywood actor to voice acted and motion capture,no need to hire high quality story writer, etc…just jump into oversaturated market—>profit
Shame since i only played COD for the campaign lmao
it’s not like i was planning on buying either but i’m really appalled by the sheer laziness of those shekel collectors
there isn’t a speck of effort from AAA nowadays, it’s still amazing how
normies still line up to buy their annual industrialized crap every year fully knowing they’re paying full price for a crappy incomplete early access with microtransactions
