Aaron McDevitt has just released on Steam Early Access a new F-Zero-inspired machine racing game, called Aero GPX. Aero GPX is basically an F-Zero clone for the PC, and as you will see it looks bloody incredible.
Aero GPX is an anti-gravity racer that is focused on high velocity, flight, machine-to-machine combat, and responsive controls that are simple to pick up but difficult to master. There are 30 machines on the circuit for each race. Pilots fight for the best position possible with high speeds, risky maneuvers, and visceral attacks. Not only that but the game comes with a few twists of its own to feel like a new experience with hints of nostalgia.
The biggest feature, at least in my opinion, of Aero GPX is its speed. The machines in this game move fast. And when I say fast, I mean REALLY FAST.
Since Nintendo does not plan to bring F-Zero to the PC, this is the best alternative. So, it will be interesting to see whether or not PC gamers will embrace it.
The Steam Early Access version has the first 15 circuits of it (out of the planned 25). The game will stay in Early Access until March/April 2025.
It’s also worth noting that you won’t need a high-end PC to run it. According to the PC specs, PC gamers will at least need an Intel Celeron G5905 with 2GB of RAM and Intel UHD Graphics 610. The game will also only require 2GB of free disk space. So yeah, it’s almost a given that it will run on a huge range of PC configurations.
Enjoy!

God I hate arcade racing games which try to be the fastest of all.
When will they learn that faster doesn't equal more fun?
At least F-ZERO GX (Gamecube) had acceptable speed where you could still understand what you see on the screen.
Here, it's so damn fast you can't even comprehend what's happening.
I'm checking a video of F-Zero GX and it looks at least 5 times slower than this BS, and it was considered already extremely fast, though.
And who said that "retro" graphics had to be simple and ugly?
Anyway, I don't see the point in playing this over F-Zero GX.
Tired of pseudo retro-gaming lately.
grumpy mumble😡

Maybe it's just me but I'm able to perceive everything quite easily. The tracks appear to be wide enough to prevent unnecessary collisions but I could be wrong. It's just if you compare franchises like Wipeout, F-Zero and Extreme-G (prob my all time fav and most underrated sci-fi racer), all those games are certainly slower but their tracks are more narrow and you're dealing with the occasional sharp turns. In this game it seems like aerodynamics is the main focus.
The game is in Early Access and is being made by a solo dev on a tight Kickstarter budget. So if others feel strongly about the vehicles being too fast they can notify him about it. But so far the reception seems to be all positive.
While the graphics are simple do resemble that comic book look, it's at least a proper attempt at creating 3D visuals, unlike Nintendo's online-only pixel art of a slop on the Switch. Don't get me wrong, that game was pretty fun from my short experience with it but it's not a proper mainline F-Zero game that everybody wants.
All these indie F-Zero clones are doing a better job at making an F-Zero game when Nintendo themselves just can't be arsed. I have a hunch that it's in the works for the next-gen system but as of right now I'm just glad that these indies exist, even if they're far from perfect.
Gamers like you who call themselves gamers are disgusting. Gaming communities would be a much better place to be in if asshats like you are not in it. If you hate everything so much, then quit your stupid hobby and go get another hobby which involves scrubbing toilets in offices.
Aero GPX is already getting a lot of love and I love it. You're just another piece of crap nobody.
It's pretty neat and I was tempted to spend $17 on this. I know it helps the creator but …. I feel bad. It just isnt pay worthy material. We used to get better on demo discs and then paid for the whole thing. This is early access? 🙁
I pledged to it on Kickstarter, it's actually pretty good from what I played thus far. My only complaint is no online multiplayer (tho local multiplayer is planned) is planned from what I heard, but this is just one guy developing the game.
Well it could have been something far greater if more people bothered to contribute to the Kickstarter campaign. but evidently they had more important things to spend their money on. And to be fair, most demo discs back then mainly contained highly anticipated AA and AAA games. Not low budget indies like this.
There is a demo for this game. Its been available for a long time. From what I've seen you can select up to 10 vehicles and race in multiple tracks which sounds reasonable for a demo.
Dumbass comment, get your head out your a*s.
Didn't like it at all. It's so lifeless and generic.
Upcoming Phantom Spark is more enjoyable.
Didn't like it at all. It's a generic button-mashing slop of a game, that tries so hard to be as aggressive as possible, because it has nothing else to offer.
It's the type of game that caters to 14-year-old e-sports players and speedrunner neckbeards. The time to beat a track became an online e-peen contest just minutes after the demo released. 90% of youtube videos on this game are literally speedrun comparisons, it's that shallow.
At no point can you actually relax and enjoy the game. The tracks are narrow, so you're constantly bumping into the side of the track until you fully learn it. You're fighting tons of opponents which forces you to stay ahead or you'll bump into them too, because the speed of the game is so high. So you're forced to diligently learn each track, and where to use special moves.
The special moves themselves are annoying to learn and to pull off. It's like playing a fighting game on a track, where you're constantly having to repeat the same tracks to learn exactly where to use which move. It's like fighting games, and I personally hate today's fighting games.
The game is way too aggressive. It tries so hard to be this hardcore racer. But that's all it has to offer, because it's a lifeless game, there's no story, no setting, just generic slop.
There's another "f-zero" type game coming out called "Phantom Spark" btw, it is more enjoyable imo.
It has characters, a story, a setting you can find yourself in. The tracks are wide and opponents sparse, which allows you to play much less aggressively. It allows you to play at your own pace and have fun, it is a much better game imo.
I always like hearing about newer games but in comparison to Aero GPX or any other sci-fi racing games: the vehicles designs are boring; they all look the same. It has that modern progressive look to it which I can't stand from their haircuts to the overall effeminate colour gradients which is seen throughout the environments and UI.
Aside from that, it looks like it could be a solid experience and it's not trying too hard to be like F-Zero or other well known racing games. All of these games are catering to different audiences and that's the way it should be. If you don't like what you're seeing with this game at least you have others to look forward to.
Are you kidding me? I saw clips of Phantom Spark and it looks boring as hell. I wanna race against real opponents, dammit! Not Ghosts!
It is getting raving reviews. Your loss.
Block my a*s all you want, but you're just another piece of garbage with sh*t for brains. Aero GPX is getting a ton of love as it should be because its more appealing and Phantom Spark looks like it's nothing special, don't play the latter.
Maybe I didn't watch the same video, but I've seen a healthy mix of narrow and wide segments. Your complaint about needing to learn the track and how to pull the best moves and driving accordingly WITH that knowledge, for the best lines and therefore the best results well, that's what racing IS.
Maybe the genre is just not for you.
Youtube trailers/speedruns show perfect runs. In reality you will make mistakes and hit the side of the narrow tracks, causing you to lose control. It's very punishing, 1 hit is enough to lose the race. And if you like that, great, I don't. Plenty of games that handle this much better.
