Now here is a pleasant surprise. 3D Realms and Saber Interactive have just announced a new Painkiller game. This will be a fast-paced action FPS with support for co-op and solo, and it will come out on PC in Fall 2025.
In this remake, players will be able to wield infernal weapons against relentless demonic hordes. Alongside your friends – or alone – you will be able to fight against lots of enemies.
As its description reads.
“Trapped in Purgatory, you are sentenced for your transgressions against Heaven. But the Voice of the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you are to stop the fallen angel Azazel who is about to unleash his demonic armies onto Earth. You will face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers and three monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.”
Players will be able to jump, dash, and hook across vast biomes while fighting enemies with a host of new and classic Painkiller weapons. The tarot cards will also return. By using them, you will be able to enhance your abilities and combine them with other players to obliterate your foes.
Painkiller will have four characters to choose from. These four characters are the Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch. Each of them will have unique abilities and different stats.
Enjoy the trailer and stay tuned for more!

i can dig it
Brand new shovel, 2.99 a pop, guaranteed to move dirt. Buy one, get none free. (While stock lasts)
as Judas priest once said " THIS IS THE PAIN KILLER", this one is definitely made for me.
what i want: a turok game like doom 2016.
What i got, a turok game like day z and a painkiller game like day z but first person.
Too much pink and purple for my taste, pass.
Its 2025 bigot!
Because every FPS nowadays needs to have that sweet little "Inspired By Doom" ™ attached to it to immediately sound "edgy and cool" enough to have these gayme journalists hyping and worshipping whatever generic POS that is only for it to ultimately turn out to be ANOTHER generic FPS like 1000+ other indie FPSs on Steam or outright terrible game even.
This pretty much looks like a mere Painkiller-themed Doom reboot game. Oh wait, because we don't already have that one too, it's called (((Doom The Dark Ages))).
You know, if we lived in a sane, civilized world where every good and kind person was equal to each other and was able to develop his own video game with his own original ideas and creativity (without the requirement of being a spoiled brat born with a silver spoon into his mouth [1% or less of the global earth population have that luck] rather than the upside down, ju-die-zed groomer tyranny and dystopia that we live in now where you could even get imprisoned for daring to commit a heinous crime such as breathing and exposing the truth about these rainbow groomers), I and almost everyone here on this site would've developed games that are far much more interesting than whatever ghey POS that we have nowadays.
DOOM 2016 and sequels are the only good, GOOD reboots i can think about, so i really don’t understand wheres all this coming from.
This painkiller here surely won’t feel like the original, pretty much no reboot feels like the original one, but looks ok and co-op might be interesting for many, me included – if this comes out a good game i’m pretty sure i’d enjoy a campaing with some of my friends.

Yeah, I didn't say that the Doom reboot games were bad (thought I'm already really skeptical about The Dark Ages, because I already don't like how it looks), I just meant that whenever a dumb developer, mostly indie developer (though not in this case) has no creativity whatsoever and just wants to make a another generic game while cashing in on a successful game's name, they just add that "Inspired By" tagline to immediately get these idiot normies' attentions, pretty much exactly like how so many dumb developers use the "Hardcore Souls-Like" ™, or like when indie developers use the "Quirky EarthBound-Inspired RPG" ™.
Ooo… let me assure you that the latter tagline is a so extremely overused cliche in the indie scene, yet 99% of these stupid generic games either end up never releasing or even ultimately turning out to be outright trash that gets forgotten 1 week at maximum after release, minus one game that, to me at least, surprisingly turned out to be a masterpiece and much better than the whole EarthBound series (EarthBound itself is actually meh to begin with).
Also, welcome back @oxidized:disqus! Long time no see!
Hell yes, the first Painkiller was amazing back in the day, so hopefully this one is just as good, if not better!
EDIT Just saw this from the FAQ posted on Steam:
Q: Can I play offline?
A: Yes, you will be able to play Painkiller solo with AI-controlled heroes.
Forced co-op shooter… Hype DEFLATED
A little bit like Left 4 Dead, then?
Heh, who knows, maybe it'll be good.
I feel like I'm too old for this kind of game though.
But yeah, me too, I have fond memories of the first one. Can't believe it was 20 years ago… Sheesh…
I remember loving the asylum level, it had such a horror movie atmosphere…
Yeah, this is what I absolutely despise about almost every FPS game despite FPS being my all-time favorite genre; forced online mode.
I mean really, just a few weeks ago I was discussing with my bro (who doesn't "hate" shooters, just not into them that much) where I told him about this "shocking" (surprising) revelation that the FPS is just so saturated with forced online modes, even in older ones and even ones that nobody cares about their online modes and it was actually the campaigns that what made these games so great.
I mean, just think about it for a minute:
Doom has multiplayer, yet nobody cares about it
Half-Life has multiplayer, yet nobody cares about it
Crysis has multiplayer, yet nobody cares about it
F.E.A.R. has multiplayer, yet nobody cares about it
Serious Sam has multiplayer, yet nobody cares about it
Far Cry (not talking about the trash newer ones) have multiplayer, yet nobody cares about it
And so on. Even FPS games where they are known to have great multiplayer modes like the older Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Halo games, their multiplayer modes alone wouldn't have made them earn the popularity that they have nowadays. I mean, having an online-centric FPS like Unreal Tournament is no problem, but the thing is, having half of the budget going into an FPS with a campaign into the MP mode hampers what could have been an even greater single-player experience.
Lest we forget when one of the Condemned 2 developers openly admitted years after its release that they could've spent the multiplayer budget into the campaign to deliver a better campaign so that it could've sold more copies. And that's literally and exactly why Condemned 3 never happened in his own words.
I want to like this twice.
Yeah, this is a pretty unfortunate fact about the FPS genre for true FPS fans and not the internet age kiddies who, whenever they think of "FPS game" they immediately think of PUBG/Fortnite/Overwatch and the latter CODs.
And whenever I think of "FPS games with no multiplayer", the only games that immediately come to mind are just Metro and BioShock because of how so little FPS games like these are, and I actually had to look up a list to see more FPSs like that and then remembered these too:
Disruptor (1996)
Black (2006)
Superhot
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
Wolfenstein TNO/TOB/TNC
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Half-Life Alyx (VR FPS, nobody has a VR headset to play it)
System Shock 1*
Resident Evil 7*
Metroid Prime*
Dishonored*
*Technically not even FPSs, just games that feature firearms and played from a first-person perspective.
And that's pretty much it, sadly.
you are clueless every fps in the 90s had multiplayer except maybe system shock 1 and terminator future shock. you are pushing a false narrative you might aswell say oh nobody cared about multiplayer in quake lol. FPS not having multiplayer in the 90s was rare and it's only the people who suck at shooters are want no platforming in their fps or multiplayer and they want casual waypoint markers.
Why are you being so butthurt and mass replying and downvoting almost all of the comments here? Did someone pee on your pants, sweet baby snowflake?
it's only the people who suck at shooters are want no platforming in their fps or multiplayer and they want casual waypoint markers.
it wasnt untill casual games like bioshock and hard reset that FPS single player only shooters became popular.
doom 1993 set the standard that all FPS should have single player, deathmatch and cooperative and even halo combat evolved followed this standard.
anyone abandoning this standard is a half baked sh*t product.

1. "doom 1993 set the standard that all FPS should have" Hey, standard =/= good
2. Why did you come here on this site all of a sudden? Isn't it about time you go back to your (((Wccftech))), little "president" Bi-sexual-den or Trumpy lover?
anyone who doesnt like trump is pushing for the future of america to be that of demolition man 1993 you are sick mentally ill and twisted please punch yourself in the face so i dont have to and it's you who is the bisexual mutant.
multiplayer in FPS in the 90s was so popular it's why they ended up making quake and unreal multiplayer only games at one point man ''quake 3 arena and unreal tournament'' lol bro unreal 1998/gold had multiplayer and single player same with quake 1/2.
i never liked the idea of multiplayer or single player only the games feel half baked and incomplete without both period..
Yawn
You aren't worthy of discussion because you sound like an edgy 6-year-old PUBG/Fortnite/Overwatch player who never stepped foot outside your home for once and just thought you'd waste some time here on DSOGaming where real gamers and grown ups hang around because you have nothing else to do in your sad, pathetic and miserable "life"
Have a nice little block.
deus ex, system shock 2, terminator resistance and robocop rogue city being recent examples.
System Shock 2 does have MP AFAIK (original, not related to the remaster), and it's not new to begin with.
As for Deus Ex, Terminator Resistance and RoboCop Rogue City, yes, I just forgot about them. Like I said, I quickly looked up a list and remembered these (the list was from 2020).
yes and no one plays it.
I don't know what sort of point you're trying to make. Yes the devs will sometimes make a sp centric fps with mp as a side bonus. But online mp also has it's value. Left 4 Dead is probably the best co-op shooter ever made, and better than the overwhelming majority of sp fps games.
As I already mentioned it in my comment:
Also:
You're actually right on this one, but the thing is, Painkiller isn't a co-op game and never was. It's like turning L4D into a single-player game with a campaign. Does turning L4D into a story-driven single-player campaign work for a franchise that the selling point of it is the co-op gameplay? Of course not.
you saying nobody cares about multiplayer is a lie.
only crysis people didnt care about multiplayer pretty much
I'm with you there. Guess no Painkiller with updated graphics and intact mechanics for us then. Shame.
hmmm…this sux! The charm of Painkiller is running solo into these huge arenas with tons of monsters.
Let's see how it turns out with AI teammates…maybe can just disable em.
Looks great!
I love rainbow dash 🌈
I love rainbow dash 🌈
UE5?
Finally an old-school shooter that doesn't look like sh*t.
I never forget the creepy AF abandoned orphanage
Shameless Doom Eternal + Dark Ages clone.
I'm OK with this.
its actually doom 2016/eternal/dark ages that are shameless painkiller 2004 clones.
doom 1/2/3/64 are all key hunting level progression shooters and doom 2016/eternal/dark ages are painkiller 2004 wave shooter clones. clear wave of enemies to progress to a new area.
Well, they have the basics, proper hordes of enemies (as opposed to Eternal's this-weapon-for-that-enemy duels) and a couple iconic weapons from past entries.
Everything else looks like typical nu-Doom nonsense, neon colors, dashing, etc.
I'm… "whelmed" at best.
Can this wash away the stains of the abomination called "Doom Eternal?"
OH YEAH!!!
This looks dope, so excited this is coming back! PK games were the s#!t during my high-school days!
"People Can Fly" …….. Damn you dumbfuc##rz !!!! instead of reowning this gem …….. you are developping trash online PvP games that eventually will fail terribly .
Single player AAA Linear FPS continues its disappearance, CoD annualization killed MY favorite genre.(still excited for this, better have impaling to the wall and crazy physics)
