The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Mod Adds Reshade Ray Tracing

BeyondDreams has released a custom reshade preset that adds support for Ray Tracing Ambient Occlusion and Ray Tracing Global Illumination to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. This mod aims to significantly improve the graphics of the game, so make sure to check it out.

Going into more details, this mod is based on Complete RT and eLITE RT. And, to be more precise, it will improve the in-game sky lighting, global illumination and ambient occlusion. All these improvements are also thanks to Reshade’s Ray Tracing. And, since the game did not support RT, it’s a pleasant welcome.

Complete RT is one of the best Ray Tracing Reshades. This mod has one of the most advanced screen-space Ray Tracing Shaders, letting you add GI, AO, Matte, and Glossy Reflections to your games. It also offers Color Grading, dynamic Depth of Field, and an immersive Camera Mod.

As I’ve said, Ray Tracing via Reshade is not as good as native RT. Reshade Ray Tracing is using depth information available in screen space in order to provide its “ray tracing” effects. As such, these Ray Tracing effects are not as accurate as the native RT effects that most modern-day games support. With that said, this is still a form of RT. Plus, it can improve a game’s visuals.

To showcase the mod, BeyondDreams shared the following video. At the beginning, we get to see some comparison scenes. These will give you a pretty good idea of all the visual improvements I described above.

To capture the gameplay footage, BeyondDreams used an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 with an Intel Core i7 14700K. The game was maxed out, and its resolution was set to 8K. To achieve playable framerates, BeyondDreams also used DLSS.

Yesterday, Nixxes released a new patch for the PC version of TLOU Part 2. That patch improved performance for those that have enabled Resizable BAR. On our PC gaming system, we saw a 7% performance boost. It’s not THAT big of a deal. Still, this is free performance. So, I can’t really complain about it. Plus, we can now use Resizable BAR with it.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. The problem with Screen Space RT is inconsistency. The lighting always fluctuates. It's usable for screenshots, but not for gameplay.

  2. 0:20 vs 0:22 image quality thrown out of the window, imo. Is it DoF off at first and then turned on for the reshade? or maybe is part of the reshade? I don't like it either way, I only like DoF in cinematics or scripted camera movements.

  3. Now you can see Joel die with Ray Tracing within the first few hours of the game!

    1. SSR > RT is a bit of a strecth (but understandable the low RT reflection resolution and bad blurry denoiser probably make it a bit off for plenty ) , probably combo between SSR + cubemap would be better, and also add planar reflection for character reflection (Hitman 3 for example is the best on that category). Also never forget SVOGI, its probably very close to RT in simulating effect of color reflection due to light propagation around object and way lighter than RT (Days Gone have it for example)

For FPS even way more simple ,you dont even need to render any complete full 3D character until you found a mirror and draw them instead on that plane only, rather than make a full 3D model you never saw on cam and then reflect it with RT or Planar …
