DOOM 3 Redux – 20th Anniversary Edition is available for download, overhauling over 2300 textures

Modder ‘Clear_strelok’ has released the 20th Anniversary Edition version of his Redux Mod for Doom 3. This latest version of Doom 3 Redux overhauls over 2300 textures, and it’s a must for everyone who wants to replay this old Doom game.

Doom 3 Redux greatly improves the game’s visuals with over 2,300 enhanced textures. It includes 700+ textures from Monoxead and Wulfen texture packs, plus new ones. More than 1,200 textures have been remade for Redux, usually at 4 times and up to 16 times their original size. Many texture sets have been created from scratch with high-resolution normal maps, and other textures have been redrawn (diffuse+specular) using the original normal maps.

The modder has improved hundreds of HUD and GUI elements, recreating them in high resolution to fit 16:9 and 16:10 screen sizes without stretching. He also fixed various UI problems, typos, and language errors.

And that’s not all. The mod supports common widescreen resolutions right away and gives better mapping and control options. You can also adjust texture resolution, field of view, anisotropic filtering, camera shake, and more. In other words, this is more than a new HD Texture Pack.

Doom 3 Redux also has many visual improvements. Players will see more and better dynamic lights, fixed errors in maps, and corrected textures. There are better materials and improved static shadows where needed. The sound is also better, with fixes for broken or missing audio, clearer sound effects, improved audio logs, and some optional new sound effects.

As said, this is a must for everyone who wants to replay Doom 3. Do note though that the mod is only compatible with the original 2004 version. It’s not compatible with the BFG Edition.

You can download the latest version of Doom 3 Redux from this link. Below, you can also find an atmospheric video from it. Although it’s a really old video, it highlights some of the improved textures.

Enjoy!

  1. IMHO, doom 3 was the best doom game ever. Many believe it to be otherwise of course, but man, that dark atmospheric corridors…
it is good that this great talents of modding community prolong the life of this very high quality game.

    1. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I played Doom 3 right after finishing Doom 1 and 2 around the time 3 launched, and while the beginning of the game was impressive, the excitement tapered off real fast as it just became a series of narrow dark corridors which limited the kinds of enemy encounters in a very negative way. You only ever fought a few slow-moving enemies at a time, and they almost always spawned in one after another. The spawning is also telegraphed so hard that you can just camp near the spawn point and blast the enemies point blank the instant they appear and the job will be done.

I also replayed the game with all sorts of graphics mods about 2 years ago and the gameplay didn't age too well. The expansion was also just alright while the lost levels or whatever were just outright terrible. I can see why they were originally "lost." Should've remained that way lul

IMO Doom 64 did it right with the horror tone. It still mostly maintained the big levels that the first two had while being very atmospheric. And unlike Doom 3, it didn't have cheap jump scares. Doom 2016 also did it extremely well, while Eternal's atmosphere was a downgrade (but still a great game). It's too early to make a judgment call on Doom: The Dark Ages as we only have one trailer, but from what I've seen I think it's shaping up to be better than Eternal. Here's hoping for more of it at Quakecon next week!

Disagree, this only happens if you save scum or played the game way too many times.

      2. Play Doom 3 Phobos, it makes the game fast paced and enemies are faster and hit harder. There's a complex plot on that mod that it's something like a lesbian Total Recall, but nothing offensive or r3tard3d.

  2. I think the best graphic mod to date is essential HD mod for Doom 3, you can also install other modifications to tweak gameplay, and even have the bodiestay4ever mod that makes enemies non gibbable and demons never despawn which is great but can cause crashes in some places like doors or lifts.

  3. I have a lot more excitement over a re-work of a 2004 game than anything in the current pipeline. Kind 'a sad state of affairs actually…

  4. I don't like that game, but I sure love and miss those graphics…

Late 90s-Mid 2000s was the peak of PC gaming for me, in both gameplay and aesthetics. (a better word than graphics)
This reminds me a lot of Prey (2006). It's such a nightmarish and captivating vision.

You don't see anything even remotely close to this in the 2020s.
We got some nice "boomer shooters" like CULTIC, and I sure love pixel art, but we never get "semi-realistic" (whatever you call it) 3D FPS like this anymore.

Wait, let me check my folder of "recent" FPS releases, maybe I can find something…

    – Dusk HD… OK, a remaster of a 2018 FPS, so that's already a bad start. 🤣
    – Quake II Enhanced… lol! Wait, I'm sure I can find something recent!🤣
    – Exhumed/Powerslave Saturn/PS1 port… give me a minute, alright?
    – Serious Sam 2 HD… Damn it!!
    – Hands of Necromancy… At least this one is "new", but once again, it's a "retro" FPS, huh? See what I mean?
    etc.

Where are the MODERN FPS with realistic graphics and engaging stories and cool aesthetics and stuff? Where? HMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm???

Back when ART DIRECTION still existed! Sigh…

  6. Hot take: BFG Edition was noticeably better version of the game. More ammo around; head mounted lamp; brighter lighting in environments all around; stupid no oxygen, surface of Mars segments toned down. Brought the game far more in line with the other Doom games.
