Stellar Blade new feature-2

Stellar Blade is one of the few games that benefits greatly from 8K

These days, I’ve been playing Stellar Blade at 4K with DLAA. And, for whatever reason, the game suffers from major specular aliasing issues, even at 4K with DLAA. So, you know what? I decided to try the game at 8K, and this is perhaps one of the few games that benefits greatly from 8K.

But what is specular aliasing, some of you may ask. Well, this is aliasing that occurs on metal surfaces. This can affect fences, bars, metal doors, and generally all metal objects.

Here is an example. When you go to the Hall of Records, pay attention to the horrible aliasing that can be easily seen in all metal surfaces there. Sadly, I could not capture 8K and 4K screenshots from it, as you cannot re-visit it. However, the specular aliasing is pretty horrible there.

I should note that these issues are not exclusive to the PC version. The PS5 version also suffers from them. Look at the same exact issues from the PS5 version in the following shot. You can see them in motion in this video.

PS5Pro specular aliasing issues

So, now that we’ve established what this aliasing problem is, let’s compare 4K with DLAA to 8K with DLSS Quality. Here is a video. Pay attention to the bars. As you will see, there are obvious aliasing issues, even at Native 4K with DLAA. By switching to 8K with DLSS Quality, we get a more stable image.

And that’s not all. Let’s take a closer look at some distant objects. Look at how bad and full of aliasing the Native 4K with DLAA shots look compared to the 8K with DLSS Quality shots.

The benefits of 8K can also be seen on Eve herself. Look at her hair and her gear. At 8K, even though we are not running at native res, we are getting a more stable and less aliased image.

And we are not over yet. Look at these metallic stairs. Look how much detail you lose at 4K with DLAA. At 8K with DLSS Quality, you can see all the small metals, fully detailed.

Another thing to note is that HDR worsens those specular aliasing issues, making the game feel awful. The only solution for those who want to game with HDR is to bump their internal resolution.

To be honest, I don’t remember a game that could look so much better at 8K. This is perhaps one of the few in which I immediately saw the benefits of 8K.

So, remember those “8K is useless” comments? Well, those didn’t age well, did they? Unless, of course, you are completely fine with aliasing issues in your games. And, if you are OK with it, why are you demanding more powerful GPUs to game at Native 4K?

The good news is that Stellar Blade is greatly optimized on PC. At 8K/Max Settings with DLSS Quality and Frame Gen, I was getting over 100FPS at all times on the NVIDIA RTX 5090. So, if you own a high-end GPU, you will be able to enjoy it.

  1. A more "like-for-like" comparison would've been 8K with DLSS performance VS 4K DLAA as both of those use 4K as the base resolution. The difference in performance would be interesting too.

You should also really start doing tests with DLDSR as I have a good feeling that 6K DLSS quality DLDSR'd down to 4K (so basically 4K upscaled to 6K then downsampled back down to 4K) would be extremely comparable to 8K DLSS quality but with higher FPS.

    1. a coment about a game without jew hating looks good on you but how do you explain you frind cyan color that you upvote his silly hate coments

  2. I understand the issue with the rendering and am still wrapping my head around that this was the fix. I want to question the art direction, but not quite. Use a different material, choose different texturing, something. Feels like hearing a PS2 game transforms when it gets supersampled.

    1. Yea the PC version should let us un-dither her hair with a setting and take that performance hit rather than resort to supersampling.

  3. oh a game news

    More Senseless Murder In Palestine

There are now 71 cases of abduction of Western women in Palestine, They are raped until pregnant and held captive until they give birth to a baby. The babies are used in medical experimentation to investigate a way to implant bombs in them that will pass through security scanners at airports. After research the babies are tossed into a dumpster to eventually die a slow agonizing painful death from rats eating them.

        1. What's even better is if you just ignore their posts entirely. Don't downvote, don't reply, hell, don't bother reading it. As soon as you see the name just scroll right past it. IMO it's more effective as it makes them waste their time writing replies to you even though you don't read them.

          1. Certainly, no doubt! I remember gentlemen sharing their views & talking online with dignity, eager to actually help other folks. It was considered noble and virtuous. Of course there were fun parts too but with standards. Nowdays it's shocking to see some disguised humans make accounts online only to spread such depravity. It's very hard to think you've to raise a child in such world.

          2. Yeah man, generation beta is going to have a tough time fixing things when they grow up.

    1. You have mental issues for leaving such a comment in a gaming website. Get off the Internet and see a doctor.

      1. You are dealing with former JIDF, bot farms. Israel used to pay students to do this crap per USA Today and the BBC. If you look at his account you can see he plays both sides of the argument so that another bot can call out the "white supremacist". It's an old tactic. Frank Collin (Cohn) of the Skokie Affair on one side and Alicia Garza (Schwartz) on the BLM side. "By way of deception, thou shalt wage war". It's literally their motto lol.

  4. The 8K with DLSS is blurrier. There's some strange artifacting that gets removed because of that, however the picture is also less sharp/clear. I don't know if this is an issue with the game's DLAA configuration, with its sharpening, or with some effects causing artifacting.

  5. The image quality in the demo is terrible. It's a blur and aliasing-fest. I wonder if the internal render resolution is very low.

  6. Aside from people complaining about aliasing artifacts I have to say the game looks beautiful and runs flawlessly on Praydog's VR mod! I highly recommend it if you have a VR headset!

  7. DLAA is mediocre compared to a better solution. If you are on 1440p you use 4k DLDSR and you can even combine it with DLSS. If you are on 4k native I would do the same thing with the DLDSR multipler or just use the transformer model DLSS since it's now good.

1440p at 4k DLDSR with smoothing dialed in (can do this while the game is running to) is all I can notice on a 27 inch display anyways. It's why I don't even care about the newest GPU's. It bypasses the garbage temporal AA blur problem without needing to brute force it. It's also why I don't care about AMD GPU's at all.

      1. MSAA can't do anything about alpha textures. That was its biggest issue. So, for games that use a lot of alpha textures, there will be a lot of aliasing even with MSAA.

The only way you can get the best AA is via SSAA (or by gaming at super high resolutions).

  8. Sony has also finally started removing region restrictions from game, this game is available globally, alongside they have removed restrictions from God of War ragnarok, Spider man 2, Horizon zero dawn remastered, Helldivers 2 and The last of us part II

  9. This is just like Ubisoft games, very poor TAA parametters on top of poor precision sampling.

Resulting in jaggies all over place, there is nothing more ugly in a game than that.

Is pure lack of care from the developers, not wanting to tweak the rendering pipeline.

  10. Im a "see everything" kind of guy, I've never once turned AA on since moving to 4k( 65 inch TV)(ill even force off AA). In fact I use Reshade to bump up detail(Delc_sharpen & vibrance). I dont understand people. you must of hated 16-bit days(all those jaggys). You guys better be playing on 65in+ monitors. I sit 4 feet from a 4k 65 inch TV, and the "jaggys" are so tiny/nonexistent, AA isnt needed(are u playing on an 82in??). Thus i could only imagine on 8k its just tech "fanboi"ng

    1. When you use sharpen you are introducing artifacts to the image. You actually lose detail. Also in the 16-bit days we were on crt's that obfuscated the jaggies. I agree with you on the 65" 4k image though, normal jaggies are negligable but the ones in the article are more noticable.

  11. Overall the game runs great but I would rather have a setting to turn off the dithering in her hair than have to use supersampling to make it not look bad. Temporal everything is cancer. You don't hate it enough.

    1. It's an UE4 game so hopefully someone figures out console commands or lines in the INI files to modify this.
