Batman: Arkham Knight – PC Version Lacks Modern Graphical Effects (AO, Bokeh DOF & Rain Textures)

Things are definitely not looking good for the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight. A couple of hours ago, John informed you about the disappointing performance of Batman: Arkham Knight’s PC build. And if that wasn’t enough, some modern-day graphical effects are missing from that particular version.

According to reports and various comparisons, the PC version lacks ambient occlusion, bokeh DOF (Editor In Chief: This is debatable. Bokeh is used in some occasions on the PC, however it is underused compared to the console build) and rain textures/shaders. Moreover, some textures seem to be of a lower quality from those found on the PS4 version, suggesting that there is seriously something really weird going on with the build that is currently available on Steam. In the first comparison, PC is on the left whereas Xbox One/PS4 is on the right.

And if that wasn’t enough, it appears that the PC version was developed/ported by 12 people (at least according to the end credits).

At this point, I’m not sure whether the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight can be properly fixed. Sure thing, Iron Galaxy will try to improve the game’s performance, however it remains a mystery whether the missing graphical effects will make a return or not.

    1. If there was a Dreamcast version it would look better than PC. I still don’t envy PS4 owners. The devs did a sh*t job on the PC version of the game. That’s all.

  1. Seems to me it’s just Arkham City with better graphics anyway and from what I’ve read it’s worse than Arkham City. Developers will be telling us next open world games make better games. Well, at least Steam users can get refunds, that makes for more console sales probably, or maybe that’s their secret plan.

On a side note, Risen 3 just destroys these buggy, messy AAA games, probably because it’s hand crafted world with no buggy physics engine middleware and I’ve never seen any janky bugs in it like TW3 or AC Unity.

    1. There are multiple gameplay systems in place that weren’t in Arkham City, not even including the Batmobile, so calling it a graphically superior Arkham City is a little simplistic.

      1. Would be hard pressed calling it the best in the series considering how they have largely removed the challenge maps from the game. Which for me was the best part of any of the games.

    2. i havnot played risen 3 , but to be honest , it would be counterproductive to handcraft any openworld game. TW3 had tiny bugs , AC unity drove the buggy while DA:I had very few bugs

I am there with you on open world games. If they can maintain the quality of the story , then yes .Otherwise there is DA:I
More than the Devs it is the investors which push the latest trending feature to be included.DA:I could have had a better storyline insted of fetch quests if they had cut down on open world a bit

      1. Not sure what you mean by counter-productive, the world design matches any AAA game, exploring does bring rewards and there are not question marks about or easy check points, you have to find stones to activate teleports like similar to Gothic 3. Just go explore and find without hand holding and not just a massive grass land with nothing much in it, not that big there is nothing in between places.

        1. counter productive in the sense that there wouldnt be much gain for the effort put

if you dont want question marks you can turn it off (in case of witcher 3)
and to be honest i have not played gothic 3 ( i was 9 when it released).
from the reviews the map was huge , but the content took a big hit(might be wring too , this is) just from the reviews

Same goes for skkyrim and fallout

Maybe a studio like bioware which has enough dosh and manpower can do it ( provided EA doesnot put its nose in it)

You also have to take in the fact that a majority if the market consist of casual gamers , and the devs have to appeal to them(as well as the investors who prod them with features like open world after seeing skyrims success)

  2. What a travesty of a game ! I hope people who bought this will massively ask for a refund on Steam. Rocksteady doesn’t deserve any money from the PC community. Their shameful port is a disgrace and an insult to PC gamers. And by the look of it, it will be really hard to restore the missing features (though one can only hope). You thought Ubisoft was bad when it comes to PC gaming ? I give you WB and RockSteady ! Shame ! Shame ! Shame !

      1. You got that right, friend ! But though I did actually feel sorry for Cersei, it’s highly doubtful Rocksteady will get any mercy from me.

        1. You really felt sorry for her? She’s like the most evil and heartless woman ever. I was chanting SHAME and throwing rotten fruit at my monitor during that scene.

          1. Actually, it’s the strangest thing, though I’m perfectly aware of the wrongdoing and evil ways of this character, it was the first time, I felt some humanity from her. Doesn’t mean, I’ve became a supporter of the woman, though. Perhaps, it’s kinda silly, but this relates to me as a french guy, considering what people did in 1944-45 after the ‘libération’ of my country, to women who had slept with german soldiers or helped them. It was awful and the scene with Cersei carried some of that from my perspective. Anyways, we’re certainly far from Arkham Knight, here… Have a good day.

          2. Lol, you got me ! Actually, I’m 46, but I’m teaching literature and History. I do love videogames because I’ve grown up with them and somehow they keep me in a younger state of mind.

    1. I bet PC kids are pathetic enough to think they feel like Cersei in that scene right now.

      “Whore” “Slut” “No ambient occlusion”

      1. Nice try. Aim higher next time : you might see the Lord of Light. For you post is weak and full of errors.

  3. LOL wtf? First game that console users can say it really looks better than PC max settings… just demand a refund period. Never gonna buy this piece of crap, even if I end up loving the game when I do try it, not after something as ridicullous as this.

        1. Yes. 🙂 Refund NVIDIA GPU because of one game and buy competitors GPU without any real performance benefit (and cut your self from Gameworks or GPu PhysX). That’s a wet dream of every AMD fan. Really “good” advise.

          1. First, why would you want gameworks access though? All gameworks games run badly and none of them do anything revolutionary or are particularly good.
Second, I can understand interest in PhysX if you’re a gamedev or modder. But for a pure gamer PhysX offers nothing. In retail games I cannot remember PhysX ever being relevant to gameplay. It’s always just cool explosions, smoke and snow. Batman does all the standard physx things and none of them have any impact on gameplay.

          2. The same marketing as TressFX, True Audio, Mantle and other solutions right? 🙂

          3. PhysX make environment more lifelike and makes better atmosphere in games. Not in evey game, but that’s valid for Batman games, Borderlands, Mafia II, XCOM or Sacred 2 (and more). It gives many good things for players. I know it doesn’t influence gameplay, but non physics API is use that way. It’s on developers to implement physics in game for gameplay. The last good implementation I remember was in Half Life 2. It was 13 years ago and it wasn’t nothing complex. BTW why people still complain that PhysX doesn’t influence gameplay and they don’t care about other similar APIs in other games? Why is it only PhysX?

            “All gameworks games run badly”

Not all. And in many games most of bugs wasn’t influence by Gameworks features. Games like ACU or new Batman are broke from very base. That’s not Gameworks fault but developers. If you want to blame Gameworks from something, please be specific and tell me which particular bug was caused by this set of libraries. I really don’t take general answers which means nothing.

All Gameworks moduls are graphical enhancements – TXAA, HBAO+, PCSS or Hairworks makes graphics better. You are right that this is nothing revolutionary, but tell me in which game did you see better solutions of same functionality? Only Hairworks has comparable competitor – TressFX. But TressFX was used on hair for only one person. It wasn’t be used in more complex way like Hairworks in FC4 or Witcher 3.

So why shouldn’t I ask for better graphics? Just because NVIDIA is behind this?

          4. Oh no…no gameworks or physx, what a terrible loss that would be. Looks like the physics in the console version is better than any gpu accelerated physx nvidia have ever developed.

          5. Physisc in the console version is still PhysX. People should finally learn what PhysX is and where it is using. Maybe we will not read comments like this anymore. BTW without Gameworks and GPU accelerated PhysX it would be only console port without additional value on the PC. If this is what you want I respect that. But I personally want something more.

      1. Well that means at least you didn’t actually really pay for the game, but in a way you did, so you should complain to not only the developer but also Nvidia.

    1. It’s not “the 1st console game”.

During the first 3 years when X360 and PS3 launched, so 2005-2007, there were times when console games looked better than PC counter parts, except for lower resolution.

Splinter Cell Double Agent on X360 compared to PC comes to mind: Lower rez textures, lower polycount for characters, worse HDR, worse shadows, substantially fewer bugs.

      1. You are talking about one of the worst Spliter Cells it seems, a game that came out with 2 versions, and even in the same version, it was a different game depending on the platform. It came out on different years on different platforms, it was already one of those porposely done to be different, to try and make it look better on the new consoles than what a PC could do when the 360 and the PS3 came out, as there was also a pre existing version for the Xbox and the PS2.

This Batman came out the same day on all platforms and all other Batmans looked better and performed better on the PC, and as you can see, this one was now removed from being sold, by the publisher who is telling people they can ask for a refund. This game was a disaster, one the internet will not forget.

        1. Yep, one version for PC/X360/PS3 and one version for Xbox/PS2/Wii.

I played and finished the PC version, X360 version and PS2 version (I wanted to play the Xbox version, but I wasn’t able to).

Personally, it’s my favorite Splinter Cell because of the high tension gameplay.

It also came in the same year on all platforms, in 2006. I wouldn’t say it was purposefully made to looks worse on PC, given that it was completely broken at launch on PC, even worse than Unity or Arkham Knight are/were now.

    1. it really is crap from what I’ve seen, game wise it looks like a fun game. But damn this game has more studering than some body with the speech impediment

  4. Guys,it is true, retarded Cocksteady cheap scumbags gave the game to Iron Galaxy,12 people who ported that piece of dog sh@t to pc.Textures are blurry and low res, slowly loading or sometimes not loaded completely and same or worse than on pc,fps is low even with highly overclocked 980 Ti.And if it isn’t enough, they capped game to 30 fps LOl…can you believe it? 30 FPS limit in 2015 ?

  5. Iron Galaxy is not only a 12 person team. There are more than 12 people who work at Iron Galaxy, and they have separate teams that work on different projects. For reference, one of my brothers works there on Killer Instinct and isn’t listed in the AK credits because he didn’t have anything to do with this shoddy port we got on PC. He is listed in the credits for Divekick however and shows up in some of the behind the scenes videos.

    1. Its not really Iron Galaxy’s fault as well. I would think that a huge game such as Batman Arkham Knight (PC) would require more than 12 people to port.

      1. well they should of hired a “pc optimizations guy”. actually that could be a good job/career. u go from company to company just to optimize these crap ports to pc. seems like more and more of these companies just say to hell with it, we will fix it later

      2. More than 12 people ,and a studio more experienced with porting something as complex as well.

    2. And it makes perfect sense to put 12 people behind an AAA port of a highly anticipated videogame franchise (fu**ing BATMAN) while the bulk of the studio keeps doing mobile games, right?

      1. No, it doesn’t make sense to put a 12 person unproven team on one of the most anticipated games of the last decade. Now tell me where I even remotely implied that…

    1. No the age of the mutant turtles is over! How dare you freak you come here!!!! I will destreo you!!!

  6. Rocksteady’s Sefton Hill tweeted that they’re working with WB and Iron Galaxy to fix the PC version, so hopefully some patches come soon.

Btw another problem that wasn’t mentioned in this article – SLI performs worse than running the game on a single card.

  7. PC version of Batman Arkham Knight is still better:

    1. 60+ fps
    2. 1080p+
    3. 65% cheaper from third party key sites
    4. SweetFX
    5. Choice of Mouse/Keyboard and/or any controller
    6. Potential for Mods

I would never ever, even for a second, think that a 30 fps locked version, forced to use a controller, 65% more expensive console version is a better choice.

      1. I am not defending it at all I am just pointing out that despite the PC version being a “disaster” it is still better than the “perfect” console versions.

    1. Why do you guys feel a need to always compete with console gamers, and always try to tell them why your pc is better than consoles? Why can’t you just let it be and enjoy your gaming, and let them enjoy theirs.

  8. I just have this itch that sony paid rocksteady to purposely gimp the pc version. I hope thats not true.

  9. funny thing is the first gameplay demo of the game was the PC version and then Sony happened and now this, like watchdogs but worst, well goodbye warner/ea/ubisoft.

PS: Official Warner people with fake user names are on forums defending this and give it high reviews

    1. Yeah those demos and great looking Nvidia videos fooled me and I bought it from GreenManGaming at a discount but still paid the price and it turned out to be huge load of sh*t.

Now the refund is out of question for me since I didn’t got it from Steam directly but lessons learned never buy anything from CockSteady & DickBrothers.

      1. my uncle bought it with season pass and stuff, we use family share on his account, it will be free for me but still i’m not touching it. 34GB of unplayable disappointment and expensive bandwith

        1. Yes better don’t touch it in this condition, I spent whole last night in trying to make it playable and the only way it becomes a little sober is when you install it on an SSD, disable the SLI and dedicate one of your graphic cards to PhysX only. Here I am talking about a GTX 980 dedicated to PhysX, so now we need fking expensive 980’s just for PhysX lol this looks like a judgement day.

Even then there are occasional stutters and texture popups so this is an absolute POS to be honest. At this point I think it is beyond fixable but lets see.

          1. Not from WB. 🙂 Steam account Sgt. Thundercok.

As I say in all my posts on this game, I commisertae with all those it is crashing on. It is an obvious mess and likely beyond fixing to a point it would work for even 85% of the people. That said……

It has run flawlessly for me. 2x GTX 970, one dedicated to Phys X. Only thing changed in .ini is 30 to 60 FPS. Tried setting each of these individually to false but the game would crash when I started to move; DOF, AO, Motion Blur. All settings on highest/on, Vsync only thing not on. Set Anisotropic to 16x in Nvidia CPL.

And I mean flawless. Not even a little hitch during Batmobile sequence. And it looks great. It didn’t look great until I turned on Anisotropic (I think).

Installed on SSD. Virtual Memory on a dedicated SSD partition 70 GB in size (page file set to 48 GB, 3x RAM). Do I need that? Hell no, but I can. 🙂

            i7-5820K@3.30GHz
            16 GB RAM
            Win 8.1

      1. well they are doing denuvo thing right now, DAI wasn’t that good performance wise but it was hell lot better than any ubi games and they fixed it, also BF hardline had stuttering for PC, their other games are just F2P or online only from now on

    1. i use to think that since they were going with AMD for their GPUs that it would make for better performance for those with AMD cards, but it seems when they release a multiplat, they usually work better with a nvidia card, boy was i wrong ! 🙁

  10. Even if this game is cracked, don’t even pirate this sh*t, it will be just waste of bandwidth

    1. They hired a company with 12 people to port the game to PC. They don’t care about PC sales.

  11. i just won’t buy the game simple as that, it’s more of the same anyways just a bit enhanced with a larger open world

i assure you any new tech ground this game breaks will be refined and better incorporated into future releases

  12. is it just me, but in the texture detail options there is only two choiceS, low and normal. when i saw that, even before playing i thought, something seem off here. Usually you get 3 settings; low, medium/’normal’, and high. In other game you even get like ultra/epic. maybe since that is little to no difference between this low and so called normal they said screw it, its not even going to run good on low so whats the point of even putting a high option in.

    1. it can be… cz Mad Max seems like side project in Avalanche. If they making Just Cause 3 and Max at same time – JC3 will have highest priority,,,,

    2. But it published by WB. Since 2013 WB started giving the pc versions to some small developers. The begining was with Mortal kombat x only to be followed by Injustice and mortal kombat 10. All of then with lof of issues online(i have bought the 3 of them). If they also give mad max pc version to iron galaxy or someone else it is very possible it will turn like this.

  13. And people were complaining that rocksteady wasnt behind the last Batman game. Though I don’t think its rocksteadys fault and its mostly WB fault.

  14. What a joke. Don’t outsource your PC version to a bunch of idiotic twats next time. No AO, no rain textures. Wow, what a joke.

Good job Rocksteady, but I guess you don’t give a sh*t because the console versions are good and they’ll sell like hotcakes.

Basically consoles get Rocksteady quality, while PC gamers get some sh**ty “Iron Galaxy” studios quality, which is literally missing graphical features in the base game.

    LOL. Pity

  15. Wow 0_0 I hope every people who bought this crap would return it
This just doesn’t make any sense at all

  16. I’m disappointed Rocksteady! This is even worse than Arkham City issues when that came out on PC. 30 fps cap being the worst offender! This is really sad news.

    1. You can do better than that. I assume you know what Gameworks is and what it do in games so tell me for which reported problems is Gameworks responsible? And please be specific. I don’t care about general statements

And tell me what you think are NVIDIA optimization? Do you really think, that people from NVIDIA coding source code for games? NVIDIA serves here as adviser and helping with implementation of Gameworks. I know you would enjoy if people would believe in nonsense stories and blame NVIDIA because of rainy day.

So I repeat my questions. For which reported problems are Gameworks in Batman Arkham City responsible and what do you think NVIDIA optimize in this game and it doesn’t work?

      1. Nvidia isn’t directly responsible for the game no, but Nvidia is also selling the game as a bundle with their own graphics cards, so YES it does make it Nvidias problem, even more so than the usual AAA game that they have to try to optimize for.

  17. When you cramp unreal 3.5 engine with sh*t tons of effect this is what you get.I wont worry about mad max. It is using avalance engine.Which is just one of the best open world engine out there.Unlike this outdated unreal engine.

  18. When you cramp unreal 3.5 engine with tons of effect this is what you get.I wont worry about mad max.It is using avalance engine.Which is just one of the best open world engine out there.Unlike this outdated unreal engine.

  19. Just what the f’ is this? This is actually looking like one of the worst PC ports in recent history. Even worse than AC Unity with the missing graphics effects.

  20. No suprise….The graphics look pretty meh since first video trailer of this game. So don’t buy this game please people.

  21. So they saw Ubisoft’s stock plummet after Unity and thought, “We should get us some of that.”

  22. Yeah, this was horrendous. We have all seen some bull shots in our day but boy, oh boy. This one takes the cake. Look at the screen shot at the top of the article. Maxed settings on pc look NOTHING like that.

  23. But….but….pc ,master race……Give me a break. How many pc games have come out this year broken compared to the console versions. Pc masterless race is more like it.
