Neotokyo – Half-Life 2 Standalone MP Mod – Now Available For Free On Steam

STUDIO RADI-8 has announced that Neotokyo – a multiplayer first person shooter that provides a visceral & realistic combat experience in a rich futuristic setting – is now available on Steam for free. Neotokyo is a stand alone mod for Half Life 2 that does not require SDK BASE or any other dependecy such as the actual HL2 game itself.

Neotokyo takes place about 30-40 years from now in a Japan that has drifted into social/political strife due to the inevitable stresses that come from changing times.

“The Japanese government is grappling with intensified external (Asia geopolitics) and internal (economic/social) problems, and there is mounting pressure from within Japan to return to the days when it exerted influence through military power and strength. A failed legislative push to alter the Japanese Constitution (allowing the Japanese military to engage in offensive actions outside of the country) leads to an attempted military coup by members of Japan’s armed forces (GSDF). The coup fails, but was very close to succeeding. In an effort to suppress further coup attempts, Japan’s Prime Minister forms a branch inside the Interior Ministry’s National Security Forces (NSF) called GROUP SIX. They answer directly to the Prime Minister and are sworn to protect the Japanese Constitution at all costs. They immediately begin to hear rumours of a rogue element of the GSDF Special Forces (JINRAI) maneuvering for a second coup attempt. These JINRAI are Special Operations Group 43 (SOG43), fierce nationalist loyal to their love of country, and a desire to put Japan back into a position of strength and power.”

Neotokyo can be described as a mix of Ghost in the Shell and Counter-Strike. The game features two modes: Team Deathmatch and Capture the Ghost.

Those interested can download it from here.

Enjoy!

  1. While I do appreciate the good work, I would appreciate even more a gameplay trailer than a cinematic one (I know it’s more professional and show the competence of the team and all that).
Apart from that, looks kinda interesting (and for some reason, made me remember Perfect Dark n64)

      1. I know, its more of a grudge I am having with cinematic thingies these days xD
I have looked some gameplay and I am hoping to fix my internet issues to give it a try 😀

    1. no. this game is owful. there are olny 5 servers online, very bad shooting mechanics. game needs improvements.

  2. Finally! Waited for this for about 2 years since it was greelit.

For those who do not know it’s a pretty old and respectable Source mod. Came out in 2009, but was in development since 2004 as a modification for UT 2004.

      1. Half-Life 2 came out much later (7-8 months after UT2004), and Source is much advanced than UE2 (the first version was released in 1998).

        1. >UE2 (the first version was released in 1998)

That’s UE1. UE2 was first accessible to licensees in 2001 (Wikipedia). UT2k3 is the game I think of when I hear UE2.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely agree that Source was more advanced than UT2k4, that part of your post is sound. But isn’t it also less userfriendly? Hammer has an awful reputation and to this day I think Dark Messiah is the only non-Valve Source game that didn’t seem terribly restricted by the engine. And yet Arkane still ended up switching to Unreal Engine for Dishonored, I wonder why.

          1. Looks like I was wrong about the date, but yeah, that doesn’t really changes the meaning of my post.

And again you said “I wonder why”, when you probably know why. Likely because UE3 is much advanced and user friendly than Source today. I can’t really claim that since I’m not a developer, but Arkane are not the only one who switched Source to UE. Zeno Clash, Chivalry, EYE, Dear Esther (probably the most beautiful “game” on Source, and yet, they switched to CryEngine).

Source 2 is in development, although I don’t think that it will compete with UE or CE. Things changed. You can buy those engines for ~15$. Valve aims at something different, like much more simple process of creation user generated content on Steam.

  3. Great game, I played last night for the first time in a couple years and had a blast. It’s a bit like CS, but more unforgiving and with a bit more to learn. There are three classes with different abilities, grenades, and visions modes. Plus thermoptic camo for two classes. It’s worth reading the how to part on their website first, otherwise you might be a little frustrated. Very unforgiving, high learning curve, and totally worth it.

  4. This was a really fun mod a few years ago. Shame there hardly any players anymore though, I know most people moved onto Planetside 2, Blacklight Retribution, Titanfall, Section 8 Prejudice and other sci-fi shooters.
