In an interview with Automaton, director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that PC is the lead platform for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. This is something that may please PC gamers who have been looking forward to it.
Hamaguchi confirmed this when asked whether the PC serves as the lead platform for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3.
“That’s correct,” he said.
As Hamaguchi specifically stated, the FFVII Remake series has sold very well on Steam and the Epic Games Store. As such, the team develops assets with the broad PC market in mind. To be more precise, all the 3D assets are created at the highest quality level based on PC as the foundation.
Hamaguchi then said that they categorize PS5 and PS5 Pro as “mid-range platforms” internally. Compared to high-end PCs, texture sizes may differ by roughly 1.5 to 2 times. Mesh loading may differ by 1.5 to 2 times, and polygon counts by more than three times.
It’s interesting to note that this is exactly what the team has done with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Although it was first announced only for PS5, the devs were developing all of its assets for the PC. Then, they applied what they call “reduction,” adjusting assets and tuning them appropriately for PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Despite these claims, the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth still had some awful textures. Thankfully, we got an HD Texture Pack that overhauled all of the game’s textures. Still, you’d expect the vanilla version not to suffer from such low-res textures. After all, the devs state that they are developing all their 3D assets on high-quality for PC.
Anyway, although Square Enix has not officially announced Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 yet, we do know that the devs will be using Unreal Engine 4. This should please those who were afraid of the game’s PC requirements.
Now, while Square Enix is using the PC as the lead platform, you should not expect any major PC-only graphical features. In other words, the team won’t implement Path Tracing or Ray Tracing. Right now, there aren’t any plans for such features. On top of that, I’m certain that Part 3 will also have traversal stutters. Both of the previous games had these stutters. Let’s at least hope that we’ll get DLSS 4 with MFG, Intel XeSS 2.0, and AMD FSR 4.0 at launch.
Stay tuned for more!
