Mortal Kombat 4 feature

Mortal Kombat 4 Arcade from MK: Legacy Kollection will have enhanced visuals

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is a collection that a lot of MK fans are looking forward to. For the first time, we’ll get an arcade-accurate version of Mortal Kombat 4. And, from the looks of it, this version will come with enhanced visuals.

Digital Eclipse has added the option to render the game two or four times higher than its original resolution. This is such a cool and useful QoL improvement as MK4 is a 3D game. So, being able to render the game at a higher resolution will smooth out the game’s jaggies.

To showcase these visual improvements, Digital Eclipse shared the following screenshots. On the left, we have the original version, in the middle, we have the game with 2X rendering scale, and on the right, we have the 4X version.

The good news is that MK: Legacy Kollection will also have a CRT filter. So, in theory, you should be able to combine them. In my opinion, this will be the best way to play MK4. You’ll get a crisper image, and with the CRT filter, you’ll get an image that is closer to the arcade.

For those wondering, no. The first Mortal Kombat games will not have this option. After all, those were 2D games, and there will be no benefit at all if you render them at, say, 4K. The only option that would provide a sharper image would be Integer Scaling. However, I don’t know if there are any plans to include this option in these older games.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will feature the first four main MK games. It will also have some special handheld versions of them. Plus, it will come with Mortal Kombat: Mythologies Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.

To be more precise, it will have the Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Gameboy, and Game Gear versions of MK1. For MK2, we’ll get the Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, and 32X versions. Surprisingly enough, we won’t get the Game Gear version. For Mortal Kombat 3, we’ll get the Arcade, SNES, and Genesis versions. As for UMK3, we’ll only get the Arcade and SNES versions. Finally, we’ll get the PS1 version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

The collection will also have the Game Boy Advance versions of Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition.

Digital Eclipse will release Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection on October 30th.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. God yes! It's basic emulator functionality actually but at least these resolution and CRT filter show a tiny extra effort.
The 2Ds should include some options for upscaling and CRT filters too, whatever the results may be.

    1. This is kind of bad in so many ways. You get awful vertical lines that completely mess up the backgrounds, and there is no dithering at all (which makes the graphics look BAD). I mean, look at all the dots. That's not how the visuals are supposed to look.

Here are my custom CRT settings for MAME. This is more accurate of how the real arcade looked.

PS: If you are using RetroArch, I highly recommend trying Retro Crisis filters (there are some with Dithering and Scanlines. You'll get incredible results like these showcased in the video).

      1. John, you are 100% correct. That is how I remember MK2 looking in the actual arcade. I wish I could re-live those days so much! Miss putting your quarter up to be "next". Kitana, Raiden and Scorpion were my faves!!

  2. I just want Arcade UMK3 and Mk4 they are absolutely fantastic, brutal and fast. You can play MK gold on dreamcast emulator already and it looks brilliant. But a pc port is arcade version always welcome.
