Now here is something that will please a lot of old-school FPS fans. A single developer has been working on a cool first-person shooter, called VLADiK BRUTAL. VLADiK BRUTAL will be released on August 9th, and below you can find a new gameplay trailer for it.
Here’s the game’s description.
“In a fictional country located in East Europe, a dictator runs the country for many years. Ruler is really paranoid, he did a lot of sweeps and killed people, who were against him. In order to control ordinary people, people were chipped in the neck to track them. All people got the same clothes with a certain number and it all was controlled by the government. But it wasn’t enough for the lord, he built a Big Research Centre to strenghten his assassins, but all the dirty work were on prisoners. Country had a lot of prisoners, because a lot of them fought and tried to break dictatorship, somebody got executed, somebody were thrown in jail and expoited as slaves.”
VLADiK BRUTAL will feature a brutal damage system that will allow players to dismember their enemies. It also promises to have an original plot, diverse enemies and 12 types of different weapons. Players will also be able to drive vehicles, solve puzzles, and find some secrets.
This indie FPS may very well be the game a lot of PC gamers need. From what I can see in the trailer, it has a lot of action, the dismemberment looks cool, and its combat mechanics appear to be solid. Yes, the lip-syncing is average at best. However, this seems to be a fun game with satisfying combat mechanics.
Another cool thing is that this is a single-player game. This isn’t a roguelike like most other small indie FPS titles. So, kudos to the dev for creating something that most old-school FPS fans will appreciate.
Narko Games has also shared the game’s official PC requirements. PC gamers will at least need a quad-core Intel or AMD CPU, clocked at 1.5Ghz, with 4GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce MX150. The dev recommends using an AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti or AMD Radeon RX 590.
Again, this FPS is not meant to be the next BIG thing. After all, it’s being made by one person. Still, this may be a sleeper hit (provided it is priced right). All it needs is to offer 6-8 hours of chaotic battles with enemies that have challenging AI.

Is it just me or in the 90s-2000s, we had more FPS/third-person games taking place in "normal" settings, putting you against humans? (instead of zombies and monsters? Sigh…)
The Splinter cell series, Rainbow Six series, SWAT series, Call of Juarez, No One Lives Forever 1-2, Kingpin, James Bond Nightfire, Outlaws, Redneck Rampage (okay, some aliens), Deus Ex, Postal 1-2…
Hell, even Half-Life 1-2 had mostly humans.
I feel like we don't get enough games which don't necessarily feel realistic, but at least which make me feel like it could happen in the real world.

its you most games were sci fi and this whole idea of zombies came from that era, it is now that most games have human enemies.
What made those games so great and impactful back then had everything to do with the fact that developers were given almost the complete leverage to make whatever they wanted. Which meant they had ample time to do proper research in the development process. Nowadays they're being instructed by investors with hostile intentions to replicate whatever is trending in the market which could potentially make the most dough for them. It's why the AAA scene feels rather soulless today.
Despite the way people felt about the abundance of shooters during the golden years, they were at least varied in tone and functionality. There are literally no games today that provide that same immersive and exciting feelings for me which games like the ones you pointed out, plus others like The Chronicles of Riddick franchise and Prey (2006) has accomplished. The additional ones I mentioned are both are Sci-Fi titles where you shoot and stab, club or blow up aliens, mechs and other ridiculousness, and yet they felt more believable and and realistic compared to everything being made today.
I have a major soft spot for decent storytelling and world-building and these are the things that are undoubtedly missing from modern games. Even though we do have some hidden gems coming out every once in a full moon, it's hard to be compelled to these things when it feels like a lot more is missing from them. At least for me. The same can be said about 3D platformers and the hack and slash genres which are doing a lot worse in my opinion.
DOOM? DOOM 2? Hexen? Heretic? Quake? Quake 2? Quake 4? Duke Nukem 3D? Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold? Starship Troopers (2005)? We've certainly had our share of games in the 90's and 2000's where you (mostly) weren't fighting humans.
I'm pretty sure there were plenty of old side-scrolling DOS games where you weren't shooting humans, but I don't remember most of them well enough to name them. Maybe Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage, but I hardly remember the gameplay in that one.
I wonder which list the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games would qualify for? Do you kill more humans or aliens in those games?
I expected russian Soldier of Fortune, is just russian Half Life 2. Meh.
