God of War: Ragnarok – PC vs PS5 Early Graphics Comparison

YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ has released an early graphics comparison video between the PC and the PS5 versions of God of War: Ragnarok. This video will give you a brief idea of the differences between these two versions. So, let’s take a look at it.

According to Jetpack Interactive, the PC version will also have better reflections, lighting, and higher fidelity shadows, as well as increased geometric detail. So, in theory, there should be a noticeable difference, right? Well, not exactly.

From what we can see, the only noteworthy difference is the improved Ambient Occlusion of the PC version. That’s the one feature that stands out. The lighting can also look slightly better, but that’s it.

Now I’m certain that while exploring the environments we’ll get a better draw distance. That’s something that is somehow masked in the cut-scenes. Still, you should not be expecting major graphical improvements over the PS5 version.

God of War: Ragnarok is coming to PC on September 19th. As we’ve already reported, the game will support the latest versions of all PC upscaling techs. Thus, there will be support for NVIDIA DLSS 3.7, AMD FSR 3.1 and Intel XeSS 1.3. GoW: Ragnarok may be one of the first games to support AMD FSR 3.1. So, I’m curious to see how it will fare against both DLSS and XeSS.

Although GoW: Ragnarok will be a single-player game, it will require a PSN account. Sony hasn’t made any public comment about this after the initial backlash. So, don’t expect them to remove it. This won’t be similar to what happened with Helldivers 2. It sucks but hey, it is what it is. At least it won’t be using the Denuvo anti-tamper tech.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. Is not much different from what happen with its predecessor, and it doesn't have significant differences from the PS5 version either.

This limitation is seemingly intentional by Sony, as they do not want to portray the PS5 as an inferior experience.

Considering that most console games run on medium settings, God of War Ragnarok could potentially look twice as good on PC. Ghost of Tsushima serves as another example; it did not receive enhancements beyond the capabilities of the PS5.

    1. Chuckle at "twice as good". How is that measured exactly? The devs don't need to upgrade the textures/graphics, because simply, they look great already and why create unnecessary extra work? Also, PC gamers are already running into VRAM issues in some console ports as it is…

The main upgrade for PC gamers (with sufficiently powerful hardware) will be the framerates, as it hardly gets above 60 fps even in performance mode on PS5. Many PC gamers won't touch a game unless they can get >100 fps, myself included. For that reason, I wouldn't have bought the PS5 version even if I owned one. We'll also have access to framegen via lossless scaling, DLSS/FSR to ensure framerates are high.

      1. "The devs don't need to upgrade the textures/graphics, because simply, they look great already and why create unnecessary extra work?"

Well, the company suggests otherwise. From the Steam pre-order page:

        – Better reflections, lighting, and higher fidelity shadows, as well as increased geometric detail.

        – Unlocked framerates and the option of true 4K resolution expand the full potential…

        – Full integration with NVIDIA RTX™ Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 3.7, AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR) 3.1, and Intel XeSS (Xe Super Sampling) 1.2 will allow you to reach higher graphical settings and output resolutions.

I don't think the devs want to release a game that doesn't take full advantage of PC hardware. And let's face it, they probably don't have to work that hard. They could aim for midrange PC hardware and still beat the PS5 in terms of graphical quality.

      2. The only PC gamers encountering VRAM issues are those with older Nvidia cards that have below-spec VRAM—due to Nvidia's reliance on compression algorithms—or those with very outdated PCs.

For those who don't grasp the technical aspects and focus solely on FPS: if high FPS is your only concern, you might as well play the original Quake. I'm not willing to spend 60€ just for FPS alone.

With your ridiculous speech, it seems you might be one of the Ubisoft enthusiasts who doesn't object to spending 100€ annually for the same game formula with a new skin. This is the only reason I can think of for someone to suggest that developers don't need to earn their income.

          1. high school tier insults, you mean like "consoletard"? you absolute cretin.

          2. oh, so that’s what you call the maggot between your legs? your little peasant, lol.

          3. I had more fruitful interactions with AI than with you, and AI is dumb as rocks.

          4. is that because Ai is the only thing that wants to talk with you – everyone else in your pathetic life avoids you as much as possible, even your parents.

          5. nah mate, it’s true, I checked with your parents and they said “who?”

    1. Reshade Smart Sharp Clarity Clarity 2 Adaptive Sharpning Rtgi Global illumination Hundreads of shaders for every need Vastly improve any game over the ps5 counterparts.

    2. Now consider under what circumstances a PS5 would beat an even halfway-decent PC in terms of graphical quality and detail.

        1. While the PS5 may have difficulty running games at medium settings, the RX 6700 effortlessly handles modern games at high or ultra settings at stable 60FPS.

So I really don't understand your logic.

          1. Note that the PS5 has Zen 2 CPU cores, which actually degraded in performance over time because of several mitigations to speculative execution flaws, which Sony has to apply on their console, too, otherwise cracking it would become easier.

Valve has the same problem with the Steam Deck, where the latest flaw called "Retbleed" caused a noticeable drop in CPU performance with the move to the Linux 6.1 kernel on SteamOS 3.5.

            But the good news for us Linux users is that disabling all of these costly CPU mitigations is extremely easy;
in fact, I just did so on my own Deck to get a stable 60 FPS experience with Selaco, which is rather heavily taxing the CPU.

Of course, PS5 users don't have this luxury, so they are stuck with whatever Sony does to their consoles.

          2. What you mean proof, we in 2024, there more than enough coverage online about this, especially DF, I’m not doing your homework for you.

Unless you mean the RX 6700, which is a card in my household, on my wife computer, and she can play the latest games with me on maxed out settings and stable 60FPS.

        2. Hey buddy o/

Back in 2020s, when the new PS was released, it was measured to be in an rtx2060s – 2070 ballpark. The 6700 is around 2080s or higher though right?

What changed (the hw is the same, optimization gets better ofc and smarter)?

    3. I don't expect your potato eyes to even understand technology, the game on PC will look as sharp as we want it, unlike you we actually have options.

Not to mention the developers themselves disagree with your ridiculous claims, better reflections, lighting, and higher fidelity shadows, as well as increased geometric detail.

      1. lol, you obtuse piece of flotsum, I have a PC and a PS5. I have more options that you.

        1. I pitty you for making assumptions, since I own a PS5, XSX, NS and Gaming PC, not to mention older gens, so is clear who has more options.

          1. says the cretin who originally made assumptions. what a sad clown you are.

          2. lol, Kobi Blade can't take the heat so resorts to blocking – found another pathetic loser in these comments.

          3. So lacking arguments you resort to petty insults, go waste someone elses time kid /blocked

  2. The new God of War games are just ok/good. Environments are pretty lifeless and the games themselves are one and done deals imo. I'm sure the pc version will annihilate the PS5 version vanilla wise. And even more so with lighting injection adjustments

    1. I don't think you and I have ever seen eye to eye but I've been saying this and you are the first person I see admitting this fact. That is NOT Kratos. If it was any other race swap they'd be calling it out why not this one. We gotta keep the same energy. I just don't understand why this drastic change of the character was needed. A beloved character gone down the drain. The Movement & Combat is so dreadful. The desire to emulate movies have cost us a great deal in the gaming industry.

  3. I mean I'll still play it but let's not pretend this is any different than the original God of War game. Pretty sure it's the same engine with very little graphical improvements. Nothing at all like what we got from HZD to HFW. Which was also a trash game but at least looked really good.
