THQ Nordic releases playable teaser of Gothic Remake in Unreal Engine 4 that you can play right now

Now here is a pleasant surprise. THQ Nordic has released a playable teaser of a Gothic Remake in Unreal Engine 4 on the PC. Gothic – Playable Teaser is totally free for all fans who already have any of the titles in the Gothic saga or developed by Piranha Bytes, and is available for download right now.

As the press release reads, this free playable prototype will give you an idea of what a new Gothic could look and feel like. PC gamers can play the yet-untitled Gothic Remake project and roam around the Mining Colony of Khorinis.

After that, THQ Nordic is eager to learn from the players through a survey following the completion of the prototype, whether and how it should proceed with the production of a full Gothic Remake, or leave the heritage and the great memories associated with it untouched.

  1. Hell yeah loved the original but it’s UI and controls were awful. So anything is a welcome addition, looks nice as well.

  2. this game has the best worldmap and progression i have seen in a rpg, yes story is pretty good too, i always hate the combat, so yeah i would like to see how it turns out… the sequels are crap though, yes even 2, too linear compared to the first and i played wit the gold edition that ruins the balance.

  4. I’ve managed to play a couple of hours of this today and I gotta say – it plays pretty damn well. Granted, I haven’t played any Gothic game aside from 3 so not really able to compare. But so far so good. Combat feels pretty tense and tactical but the exploration bit they should definetely improve as not being able to traverse rivers or climb anywhere you want shouldn’t be a thing in a game released in 2020, 2021 or even 2022.

  5. watched some gameplay. its nothing like it, same characters, more or less, different dialogues, different environment, different gameplay, you are killing snappers right after you kill scavangers. No thanks.

  6. WTF THEY DID TO GOTHIC !!!. Health bars, markers and a f’cking dialogue wheel and trash combat system from for honor. Please wake me up from this nightmare. I want a 1:1 remake with only better graphics and AI thats all.

    1. map is linear, awful long dialogues instead of short meaningful ones, awful ai, for honor combat system, awful camera and you kill snappers right after scavangers….wtf?

    1. Yeah, it’s too colorful for Gothic. And Nameless hero too chatty. Voice acting in general and the music is inferior to the original.

    1. It’s a really janky prototype with godawful art design, you’re not losing much.
Same with the System Shock, thought that one looks much more promising than the concept THQ has put out.

      1. NightDive SS Remake nails the aesthetic and the gameplay is alright for how early it is so I’m ok with it.
The Gothic prototype is indeed awful though

  7. Taking the combat system from For Honor was a smart decision. Everything else makes me believe they don’t really understand what made Gothic so great.

  8. sigh… they are doing what most people unfortunately do when they remaster or remake older games. The fidelity goes up but the important visual elements that actually make thing feel good get ignored, even destroyed. In that last shot you can see this in particular. Walking down that mountain and seeing that vast landscape in the original is a great moment (reminds me of the first dark souls environmental design, its a maze like map but you don’t feel). In this remake however it’s a corridor with impenetrable white fog.
