Bohemia keeps supporting Arma 3 five years after release with new free content

Bohemia Interactive has released the 81st platform update for its combined arms tactical military shooter, Arma 3. As the press release reads, the Encore Update (1.84) delivers a wide variety of free new bonus content to all 4+ million Arma 3 players, such as a NATO destroyer ship, surface-to-air missile systems, radar sites, missiles and bombs.

The free new content, which was created by third-party developer BRAVO ZERO ONE Studios (co-developer on last year’s Jets DLC), enables players to enjoy more diverse and immersive scenarios, while introducing more balanced options for ground-to-air combat and vice versa.

The highlights of the Encore Update include:

  • “USS Liberty” Destroyer Ship – The NATO carrier strike group has a new addition; a destroyer-class ship with detailed interiors and new naval fire-support options. It’s also capable of launching/recovering small naval vessels and helicopters. The USS Liberty is a static object that can be placed and moved around the map via the in-game Scenario Editor.
  • “MIM-145 Defender” SAM System & “AN/MPQ-105” Radar System – A stationary missile system used by NATO forces that presents a beyond-visual-range threat to even the most modern of aircraft. It can make use of the Data Link connection via the AN/MPQ-106 radar system.
  • “S-750 Rhea” SAM System & “R-750 Cronus” Radar System – The CSAT faction’s variant of a stationary long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system capable of engaging aerial targets from beyond-visual-range. It works in tandem with the R-750 Cronus radar system connected via the Data Link.
  • Anti-Radiation Missiles & Small Diameter Guided Bomb – Both NATO and CSAT receive new anti-radiation missiles, which are designed to auto-lock on ground targets that have their active radar sensor switched on. NATO fighter jets can also be equipped with new, relatively small, air-to-surface precision-guided bombs.

Besides the new content, version 1.84 also implements various adjustments to all of the official Arma 3 scenarios and campaigns released so far. These improvements are aimed at making sure that even the older playable content makes optimal use of the assets and gameplay features that were introduced to the game over the past few years.

  1. ??? ????. ?? ????? ???? ?? ?????? ????? ?????????? ??? ?????? ???????? ????, ????? ??? 50% ??? ??????, ???????????? ”????????” (?2 ???????). ??????? Bohemia.. ???? ???? ??????.

    1. You should try posting in English though, because not everyone can understand the point you are trying to convey.

I presume that’s Greek ? I will translate your text so others can understand it better (via Google):
      ……..
“”Fine. Let’s see if they’re going to be upgraded to the graphics engine, because in 50% of the world, it’s literally “chopped” (A2 level). Immortal Bohemia .. Good Min also””.

  2. I love the Arma series and I love BI. They are a really great bunch of guys and girls that are very active with the community and developers on their forums.

    1. How is the single-player campaign by the way ?

I heard the game is kind of tough and hard to beat though, given it’s a realistic tactical shooter (at least for an unskilled player) ?

      1. I decided to work my way through the tutorial/campaign this summer but eventually gave up. Sure, I’d play it every 3 nights and might have done better if I’d stuck with it more stringently, but I put an hour in each night, so I wasn’t too undisciplined about it.

So at first, you’ll have to get used to the keyboard commands. Then you’ll have a pretty fun time admiring a realistic combat sim and the immersiveness of the scenarios. Well, I got to at least the second campaign, about 5 missions in, and I’m told I have to use acquire a drone off of a dead soldier, and I do.. and I’m struggling to get through that mission. I’m on YouTube as much as I’m in the game. And there’s already been A LOT of Google searches for previous missions, but my point is that it doesn’t let up. It keeps adding and adding. It seems like every button on the keyboard is a separate command/action. Why they didn’t bind a button to a command wheel or something like any modern game has figured out how to do, I have no idea.

Seriously, there’s a lot of enjoyment to be had.. but it comes with a very high level of learning. I knew that going in and was up for the challenge, but it’s not just the button assignments, it’s how you complete commands in general. Hit “K:, scroll the mouse wheel, right click, fire. That’s just something I made up but it’s about as obtuse as it gets. And that’s to do something like exit a vehicle.

I want to like it but need a total control conversion mod to appreciate it. I’m not a casual, I can do the missions, I just don’t like having to wonder what button to hit every 10 minutes.

        1. Thanks for your detailed explanation. That really helps. It seems the game is indeed challenging.

Those keyboard assignment keys are confusing. I think there are lot of commands in this game, and the learning curve is also not that easy.

          1. My goal with 2 of my friends (both military) was to set aside an Arma night once a week and we all fell off of it. One jumped straight into multiplayer, he couldn’t handle it. I really looked forward to my time with the game when I’d play it, but hate getting stuck. Oh well. You’re welcome though.

      2. I remember when I first played OFP back in the day it was daunting at first trying to figure out what to do as the game is unlike anything else you can play -for me though that was half the fun back then. Id imagine thats still the case with Arma III if you’ve never played OFP or any of the other Arma games.

BI have made some changes to make the game more friendly to new players though, including different control mechanics that a traditional FPS fan could get to grips with faster and tons of in game tutorial and showcase missions to help learn how to play. You still need to learn how to command your squad in single player, probably more than you would in multiplayer games with no team AI.

Single player can be quite hard as one hit can kill you if it gets you in the right spot and if it doesnt kill you it can make things even harder for you by reducing your speed and stamina or your ability to aim effectively, you do get a magic med pack that can heal small injuries, if you have a medic on your team and they are still alive they can heal any team member to full similar to games like Battlefield.

I dont think any of the campaigns are as hard as OFP and they are significantly more polished than Arma and Arma 2 campaigns were. There is a seemingly unlimited supply of user made missions to play and pretty much all of them can be played single player or COOP. The same goes for most of the official missions and the entire Apex expansion has a single player campaign that you can also play coop.

    1. It’s CPU bound, so single player performance wise it is quite decent, the FPS drops and bad performance you hear about is server side during multiplayer, even on beefy servers once you get a bunch of AI in a town the frame rates drop off.
