Yesterday, MarketWatch claimed that Grand Theft Auto V was the biggest selling entertainment product ever, surpassing even films like Avatar or Star Wars. However, this information is incorrect as there is PC-only game that has generated almost double the amount that GTA V has raised, and that is no other than World of Warcraft.
As MarketWatch stated, GTA V has earned more than $6 billion so far. On the other hand, Blizzard announced last year that World of Warcraft had generated around $10 billion. And that was last year.
There is nothing more to add as the numbers speak themselves. World of Warcraft is the biggest selling entertainment product ever, not Grand Theft Auto V.
Oh, and there is also a game called League of Legends that earns 2$ billion per year, though it’s more difficult to determine how much money – in total – it has earned since its release.
Thanks GameWatcher
UPDATE:
It appears that Space Invaders is the best selling entertainment product. While this game relied on arcade sales, it’s still considered as an entertainment product. As such, Space Invaders has earned more than GTA V or World of Warcraft.
Space Invaders has generated $13.93 billion, followed by Pac-Man ($12.81 billion). Street Fighter 2 has generated $10.61 billion so it’s a unclear whether WoW has managed to surpass it or not.

both Blizzard and Rockstar sucks
Rockstar is much better
So edgy
League of Legends has got to be getting close to WoW. The game has been out for 8 1/2 years and is extremely popular. I think it was 2014 when Riot Games reported they had taken in almost 1 billion dollars in microtransactions. I think they reported around 1.5 billion for 2015 and 1.6 billion for 2016 and 2 billion for 2017. Just for those 4 years alone that’s around 6 billion dollars and that’s not counting what they took in the 4 years before 2014.
There’s just too damn much money to be made in microtransactions. That’s why every Publisher wants a piece of it.
And what about facebook ? I bet it made more from selling user data
Facebook is not entertaining so its not an entertainment product.
mark zuckerberg is entertaining him self alot with our data
Maybe yours, never used probably never will.
“World of Warcraft is the biggest selling entertainment product ever”
From the linked article,
“three games top World of Warcraft’s revenue totals… Space Invaders ($13.93 billion), Pac-Man ($12.81 billion), and Street Fighter 2 ($10.61 billion)”
Yeap, article updated.
Glad to help.
P.S. Thank you for the article about that new textures mod for Crysis from the other day. I’ve since installed it along with BlackFire’s Mod Ultimate and… wow! In some ways the graphics still look better than what AAA games are doing today and that game is from 2007!
LMAO….Dsog fanboy detected..
So you’re back here to troll again. Well done you!
Consider me a fanboy too. One of the best sites out there, without all the fluffy click bait. There’s IGN or Dualshockers if you are looking for that kind of stuff.
I agree, John is making a good work. Of course there are some mishaps occassionally, but we are all human.
I stumbled across some pretty good OLD school FPS gaming MODs here on DSOG.
This site is truly dedicated to the core of PC gaming, unlike other gaming sites.
You may or may not agree, but sometimes myself and few others get a bit annoyed by seeing same articles being posted by John on Unreal engine 4, or GZDoom (lol), but that’s John’s personal liking and taste, and obviously we can’t convince everyone on the internet.
Despite all that, we get to know about all the latest news in PC gaming.
What an idiotic comment.
BlackFire’s Mod is actually nice. We can change many presets on the fly as well, via the Function keys.
Some of the Lighting presets look good, but some of them are too bright and look unnatural, in my opinion. But overall I love this mod, and it’s a matter of personal choice.
It’s good thing the Modder has made it very simple and user-friendly to use. We can even play ALL the game levels with the NIGHT preset setting.
Good way to sneak past the enemies in the Night.
The first CRYSIS game engine has still got a lot of room for improvement, and I’m pretty sure we can add more high resolution texture packs to the engine, if someone really intends to make a complete texture overhaul for this Game, IMO !
Happy Gaming.
Definitely. I’ve played with BFMU’s various presets and soon concluded that its default choices are to my preference too.
Despite having had Crysis in my Steam library for several years I never really got around to playing it for one reason or another. But now I’ve installed the aforementioned mods that should soon change. That said, I bought several VR games in the recent sales plus what with JK’s Skyrim all-in-one having come to Skyrim SE then it may be a while longer, haha!
PC MASTER RACE that’s why. 😉
I think we need to understand the difference between raw sales (copies sold) of a game and the amount of revenue a product has generated through recurring fees or MTX. It is much easier to milk addicts and whales than to get tens of millions of people to actually purchase something straight out. It is the highest SELLING IP, not highest GROSSING. Need we remember that WoW has lost so many subscribers they stopping publishing numbers about it? From its peek of 12 million it lost over half of that before they quit.
Nah I think the fact that he specifically said “product” meant that it excluded games with continuous revenue such as WoW, League Of Legends etc. Of course those games will have accrued more than GTA V over time.
Then you should exclude GTA V aswell, seeing that one of the things that keeps increasing its revenue is the multiplayer with its ongoing updates and events, not the mention the fact that it has sold “upgraded” versions of the game aswell, for the PC and for the latest consoles.
Even more, I think most of the revenues come from selling in-game money.
If WoW had never lost its focus, it would likely have surpassed Space Invaders by now.
12 Million subs was the peak, and it’s been downhill ever since.
Haven’t touched it since Cataclysm myself, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
Pandaria was amazing. I agree in general, but that expansion is better than any other i have played. Just as good as TBC and Wrath imho. Rest however? Yea, pretty bad, even Legion.
The kung-fu panda expansion was what fueled my decision never to touch the game again heh. They need to just drop WoW 2 on a new graphics engine already.
I hated the Pandas and most of the new zones, altho.. they did look good. And i still think its one of the best expansions ;p
Anyways, we do need WoW 2 ;p
Space Invaders will only get so far though, as it’s already an ancient relic, that will stay stuck with it’s total sold, while GTA and WoW climb.
Damn, that is incredible! LOL, I just want to be able to make 50-80k a year and have a loyal fan base that loves my games so I am able to continue to do what I love 🙂
I can’t even imagine what that type of success would taste like, awesome.
