Ian Murdock – Creator of Debian & CTO of the Linux Foundation – Has Died

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Ian Murdock passed away on Monday night. Not only is this a tragic loss for his family and friends, but a great loss for Linux and the entire Open Source community. I offer my condolences to his loved ones.

For those of you who do not know who Ian Murdock is; Ian Murdock is professionally known for being the creator of Debian, the CTO of the Linux foundation, a Senior Leader of Sun Microsystems, and for his contributions to the Open Source community including projects like Docker.

Without Debian I don’t think Linux gaming would be as popular as it is today. Debian is the backbone for distributions like Ubuntu, Mint, and Steam OS. Debian has made Linux on the desktop what it is today considering it and some of its children are the top 3 most popular Linux Distributions.

As a gamer and a daily user of Linux I owe a lot to Ian Murdock and it greatly saddens me to hear of his passing. For those of you who would like to offer your condolences, please feel free to post a comment here. You may also send an email to in-memoriam-ian@debian.org where your messages will be kept and archived.

  1. first lemmy, now ian … not a ver happy happy christmas this year. Rest In Peace Ian, as a deaily Debian user at both home at work I salute you. Hasta la vista Maestro!

  2. Really? Has any of you seen his posts on twitter? This guy was an idiot, for real! No wonder he committed suicide.

“I’m white, I made $1.4 million last year..” Who the f says that?

    1. He was going through a trauma as far as we know and you’re an idiot to write this kind of message on someone’s passing.

        1. And who the fk cares what do you think ? unlike you or most of us that person achieved something in his life and created something that WE use everyday. It doesn’t matter if he said one or two wrong sentences in his moment of depression. Get a life and grow up, if you can’t pay respects then better stay quite, whining after someone’s passing doesn’t make you look good.

          1. obviously you care, so shut the fk up. I’m a designer, I create things, and probably you are using one of the apps I’ve created. So really, shut the fk up.

    2. Tell me you have never write something “not popular” or “politically incorrect” on your face, disqus or twitter. What makes you a trully idiot is to call someone idiot on a post about that someone passing.

    3. So writing stupid things makes it right for people to die? Maybe people will remember the things you wrote when the time comes.

    4. While I agree with your assertion to him being an idiot you are an even bigger douche for posting this. People can change, and maybe he would have if this didn’t happen. Nobody should be condemned to death for being an idiot.

    5. That was part of a long string of tweets which seemed to be pointing out that anyone can be victim of police abuse, even a white millionaire.

  3. I’m still a Windows peasant myself, but I have a lot of respect for the open source nature of Linux and hope it continues to grow and be competitive. Sadly, the open source community has indeed lost one of it’s greatest contributors.

  4. ok this crap has to stop. Just cause someone is dead doesn’t mean we automatically have to show them respect. They have passed on you Cretin, plus he was a dou che in real life. Just use your fking brain ffs.

    1. I am sure your family would appreciate it if you passed away and somebody came up and pissed on your grave!
Of course you show respect even when the person is dead and they are a stranger to you!
Without any respect at all, The entire world would just be complete chaos and we may as well go back to living in caves, Killing and eating each other.

  5. R.I.P. I tried Linux in the past and some of newer iterations…I really like what people like him did for the PC community, so my respects for him.

    1. You just called him an idiot and a cretin.

Dude, just retract yourself. You dont have to pretend that you care, but at least you should learn proper manners. I take it you aren’t a kid anymore.

  6. I don’t understand why wealthy people kill themselves. Call me crazy but I truly do believe money can buy happiness in this world. With that kind of money the opportunities never end, hope never dries up.
