Here are 60 minutes of gameplay footage of Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds

PCGamer has shared a video, showing 60 minutes of PC gameplay footage of Obsidian’s upcoming RPG, The Outer Worlds. Obsidian Entertainment is well known for games such as Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout New Vegas, South Park The Stick of Truth & Pillars of Eternity.

This looks like a good Fallout 4 but unfortunately also outdated. The lighting is very flat and far from impressive. The AI for both enemies and friendlies is dumb as a bag of hammers. The world also feels empty for some reason. I do not know how old this build is and how far it is from final, but as it is right now, it doesn’t look great.

Lip-syncing is also far from great, though facial animations look OK and definitely better than many recent games. I do hope they will include an FOV (field of view) slider in the settings, because the current FOV is comfortable only if you are a fish. Same goes for the damage numbers on screen, which I really dislike and I am hoping for a toggle option.

The shooting mechanics seem fine, though the melee combat looks very basic. Also, the new V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tech assisted targeting system) now called T.T.D. (tactical time dilation) looks like a regular slow-mo effect. Still, I noticed that the energy bar did not deplete at the same rate when standing still.

Hopefully, the story and characters will make the difference in the game, but with names like Nyoka & Parvati I’m not one hundred percent sure. I think this game might be a bit late to the party. It would probably sell like crazy if it was released in, let’s say, 2015. Right now I have serious doubts, but let’s hope Obsidian will deliver as they usually do. And even if they don’t, the modders will probably overhaul the game.

By the way, what’s up with the video thumbnail?!
