Valve has just announced a new operating system based on Steam called SteamOS. As the team suggested, SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. This new operating system will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines and will – obviously – be the heart of Steambox.
In SteamOS, Valve has achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and is now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level.
As you’d expect, SteamOS will support all the features of Steam. This means that gamers will have access to all Steam games, Workshop, Steam’s Cloud functionalities, Steam’s friendlists and worldwide coverage.
SteamOS will also offer in-home streaming capabilities, media services (music, TV, movies), as well as family sharing capabilities and options.
Valve also hinted that a lot of triple-A titles will be coming natively to SteamOS in 2014, and that more announcements about those games will be made in the coming weeks.
