Mechwarrior 5 now supports real-time DXR Ray Tracing Effects [UPDATE]

After adding support for DLSS 2.0, Piranha Games released a new patch that adds real-time ray tracing effects in Mechwarrior 5. According to the developers, these Ray Tracing effects are still in a beta phase. Still, PC gamers can now enable them in the latest version of the game.

Unfortunately, Piranha Games has not shared any additional details about these Ray Tracing effects. Thus, and unless we re-install the game, we can’t tell whether they enhance reflections, Global Illumination or Shadows.

Alongside the new Ray Tracing effects, Piranha Games has updated MW5 Mercs’ DLSS implementation. Therefore, you can expect a bit better results now with DLSS 2.0.

As always, Epic Games Store will download this patch the next time you launch its client.

Lastly, we might re-install the game in order to share some Mechwarrior 5 screenshots with its new Ray Tracing effects.

UPDATE:

In order to test the new Ray Tracing effects, we’ve re-installed Mechwarrior 5. However, there isn’t currently any option that enables the RTX effects.

Here is what Piranha Games claimed on its release notes.

“If you have a GeForce RTX GPU it offers some nice visual upgrades to reflections, lighting, and shadows.”

However, and after testing the game, we’ve discovered that the game uses screen-space reflections instead of RTX reflections. You can easily test it by lowering your camera and witnessing the screen-space side effects (reflections disappearing).

Even if the game uses RTX for specific effects, there is no way to capture before/after screenshots as there isn’t any option. Thus, we’ll wait until Piranha Games provides such settings.
