Doom Reborn, standalone remake of Doom 1 and 2 in Doom 3 Engine, now available for download

Modder ‘gamehacker’ has created a standalone version of Doom Reborn and released its pre-beta version 1.61. Doom Reborn is a total conversion of the original Doom Series, and the goal is to remake the original Doom and Doom 2 games in the idTech4 engine with new textures and new models for the original weapons and monsters, as well as with recreated and re-textured maps from these classic first-person shooters.

As the modder noted, Doom Reborn pre-beta version 1.61 features an unfinished version of Map10 of Doom 2 that players can try to finish off. Moreover, the mod includes Dafama2k7’s Pre-Beta Version 1.6 mod and gamehacker has done some tweaks and changes to improve lighting and colours in various areas. It’s also worth noting that Parallax Occlusion Mapping is enabled by default.

Those interested can download the mod from here. Do note that in order to save in this standalone release, you will need to use the patch that is included in this mod (which will replace Brent’s DoomReborn.exe & Gamex86.dll With Jonny’s versions).

Surprisingly enough, Doom Reborn does actually play like Doom 1 and 2. We’ve seen in the past various attempts to remake these classic shooters in newer engines (and in the Doom 3 Engine), however this is by far the best mix of Doom 1/2 and Doom 3.

Below you can find a really old video that showcases the previous version of Doom Reborn. Obviously, it does not represent the latest pre-beta version and – as I’ve already said – gamehacker has done some lighting and colour improvements to the maps (so they can feel more like the original maps).

Have fun!
